Another strip club encounter - with a twist

Dear Doctor,

Thanks in advance for your help with this.  I will try to get down to the basics.  I went to a very high end strip club in New York with some co-workers.  I am a married man but nonetheless got a private room dance with a stripper who I believe was from the West Indies or Guyana but was living in the States for some time (I think she was trying to become an actor and traveled back and forth from Los Angeles).  I have gotten private dances before but none like this.  She proceeded to give me unprotected oral sex.  I was very turned on and I tried to reciprocate with my fingers only.  I inserted my fingers in her vagina and at some point took them out, paused, wet them in my mouth and put them back in.  I may have done this once or twice.  I am very paranoid about HIV infection.  Here are my questions:

1. From reading on the forum, it seems highly unlikely that I could get HIV from receiving oral sex.  Also, it should be noted that I did not ejaculate in her mouth but outside.  That being said, the next morning, I noticed a big bruise on the top of my penis – I think she was biting down at times.
2. I am very worried about the fingering and the fact that I put my fingers in my mouth – although not immediately – and back inside her.

I want to know if I can continue having relations with my wife or should I wait 3 months and get tested for HIV.

Thank you,

Tribeca Joe

At 4 weeks the test you had would detect about 85-95% of infections acquired 4 weeks earlier.  This would be good enought for me to not worry since I thought you were at virtually no risk to start with.  EWH

Thanks Dr. Hook.  I couldn't wait the 6 weeks and just got tested (at 4 weeks) and it was negative.  What are your thoughts about getting tested again at 6 and 12 weeks?

All of the exposure you describe falls into the category of oral sex, a very low risk for of sexual encounter.  In the very unlikely situation that your partner had HIV, your chance of getting HIV from her through either giving or getting oral sex is something less than 1 in 10,000 exposures.  Transfer of HIV with your fingers is even less likely.

Can I promise you you did not get HIV from this encounter? -no.  But if you were did become infected, you would be the first person to do so in taking care of persons with and at risk for HIV since the begiining of the epidemic.  I would not worry and personally seel little reason for you to be tested.  Your wife is not at risk.

If you choose to get tested, realize that you are doing it for peace of mind, not for a medical reason.  A test at 6 weeks would detect over 95% of infections acquired 6 weeks earlier and should be taken as further proof that you do not have HIV.

As I said, I would not worry at all.  EWH
