HIV related Illness - Negative Test

Dear Docters,

I recently was diagnosed with esophageal thrush. So the docter did an HIV antibody test I believe with Lab Corp and it came back negative. So the docter said it must be something else. Of course when you google it all you get is that it is caused by HIV HIV HIV. Though I have seen cases were people get it without HIV on Google. I was scared so I did a OraQuick Home Test for reassurance, it came back negative.

Just so you know I have been married 8 years and we have be monogamous. Plus earlier this year my wife had an HIV antibody test at her annual and it was negative. So all my exposures would of been over 8 years ago, so I would think my test recently would of shown any issues.

So my question is does my two negative antibody test prove the esophageal thrush is not being caused by HIV? Does my test results trump any symptoms or illnesses that could be related? Should I test anymore or accept that it isn't from HIV and start looking at other causes?

Thank you so much.

Final answer.  No change in my assessment or advice.  This should be obvious- if the two diagnoses are synonymous, why would my advice change because someone choose to call it a different name?  EWH

Thanks. Even though they are the same since my official diagnoses was espohageal candidiasis. Does your advice/opinion still stay the same that no more testing is necessary and my tests are conclusive negative and I have no need to worry? Thanks I promise that ends my questions. Thanks. Take care.

Sorry last question. Is esophageal thrush and esophageal candidiasis the same thing? I was diagnosed with esophageal candidiasis. Does that change your opinion that I have nothing to worry about and no further testing is needed? Sorry last question and since it is my last question I want to say thanks and happy holidays and take care! And sorry about the last post I hit send before I was ready.

Thanks so much for the help! Now I'll drop HIV as a reason and focus on maybe it being from some other reason or no reason at all . But it's good to know it's not HIV. You have made me feel much better. Thank you and have a great holiday and enjoy holiday season!

That your thrush is espophageal does not change my opinion.  If you had HIV, your test would be positve.  EWH

Thanks! That is so helpful. The internet can be a scary place. Just to verify, I want to make sure you knew I was talking about esophageal thrush and not oral thrush. Does that change your opinion or change your view on more testing or my test results being conclusive that it wasn't caused by HIV??

Thank you.

Welcome to our Forum. I'll be pleased to provide some perspective. your experience is a great example of one of the problems with the internet.  I am confident that when you would search for thrush most of the references of this problem would link to HIV infection.  This is a mis-statement however.  In fact, most persons who experience thrush do so for other reasons.  While HIV is one thing the creates a tendency towards thrush, others include having recently taken antibiotics or diabetes and many, many people who experience thrush do so for no obvious reason.

In your case, you negative HIV tests provide proof that your thrush is not a manifestation or due to HIV. lease do not worry further. There is no reason for concern and no reason for additional testing for HIV.  EWH
