Low Ejection Fraction

I am a 42 year old male in good physical health.  I haven't had any heart related issues prior to this.  By BP is 110/70 and my total cholesterol is 216 with HDL, LDL, and triglycerides all within an acceptable range. I don't have any immediate family history of coronary disease, but my grandfather died of congestive heart failure.  I was having some chest discomfort and shortness of breath so my primary physician suggested I do a cardio stress test and EKG.  The treadmill test and EKG were both normal. However, my echocardiogram showed that my "resting" ejection fraction is at 45%.  The cardiologist wasn't too concerned but wants me to return in 6 months to do a retest and check for a trend.  I am a little concerned at this point. Is this something that could be causing my symptoms?  Is this low EF something I should worried about? And should I do another test sooner than 6 months? Thank you for your time.

Statins lower CoQ10 levels and weaken muscles including the heart.

Not good for someone with a low EF!

I would repeat your echocardiogram in about 3 months.  I would be concernd about this being some type of post viral cardiomyopathy.  If there isn't improvemnt in the heart function or even worsening you would need to be started on some heart meds.

Rich,  An EF of 45, although slightly low from normal 50-70, it is not one for immediate concern.  If you are not on a statin, I suggest you ask your  cardiologist to discuss going on a mild dosage to get the cholesterol down.  I had a similar EF discovered after a routine EKG showed a small inconsistency.  I was already on a statin and my chol was 118 down from 208.  The only side effect of the statin was for the first wo weeks I took it, I had a little extra gas.  Other folks have had leg cramps for a couple of weeks as the body adjusts to the med.  After that period, all has been fine.  My cardiologist suggested 81mg aspirin daily, omega 3 fish oil twice daily and CO-Q10 25mg daily.  I have been doing this for a year and my EF is up to 47 from 43.  I am 55 and have no symptoms.  For your young age, I would surely keep an eye on your EF and any change in your symptoms.  If you feel your doctor is not giving you the answer you feel comfortable with, get a second opinion.  Good Luck.
