Having an elevated troponin (outside of the normal range) often indicates damage to cardiac myocytes -- in which the enzyme is leaked into the bloodstream. The absolute value of the troponin level depends on which type is being measured as there are different subunits of troponin (Troponin C, I, or T). The latter two (TnI, TnT) are often the most utilized when evaluating for evidence of myocardial injury, and are often done in conjunction with other cardiac enzymes such as creatinine kinase (CK) and creatinine kinase myoglobin (CK-MB) to assist in interpreting the situation.
Normal - why was the test done? Usually the value becomes elevated with time. Test is usually done after a suspected heart issue....and checked 4-8 hours afterwards.
