trini,

Coumadin (made by Dupont pharmaceuticals) is the trade name for warfarin.  This drug inhibits production of vitamin K dependent coagulation factors by the liver.  The result is that the blood does not clot as effectively.  This property of warfarin is used to advantage by doctors to prevent blood clots.  Some of the conditions that benefit from this treatment include atrial fibrillation, pulmonary embolism, recurrent stroke, and deep venous thrombosis.

Patients who take warfarin need to have their blood checked periodically to determine its coagulation rate.  This rate is usually termed the INR.  Most, but not all, patients are treated with a dose of coumadin that raises their INR to 2-3.

Hope that helps.

Coumadin is also known by the name warfarin and is a blood thinner or anti-coagulant .It is used to treat a variety of disorders where there is evidence of a clot or to prevent another clot from forming such as in the treatment of deep vein thrombosis(clot in the veins of the leg), after a stroke to prevent another clot from forming and traveling to the brain and in the treatment of atrial fib to prevent clot formation from the heart chambers not emptying completely and blood can sit and form a clot .These are only an example of some of the uses.It is a drug that acts on the clotting mechanisms in the body. The drug requires regulation of dosages based on blood levels (usually every 4-6 weeks after stabalization  ).For many it is a life saving drug.
I've been on it for 3 years now.
