Q: Would a new bill in Congress make my backyard organic garden illegal?
A: A House bill proposes to split the Food & Drug Administration, creating a separate entity to oversee food safety. It’s aimed at food sold in supermarkets and doesn’t say anything about organic gardening, pesticides, farmers’ markets or that tomato plant in your backyard.
This is erroneous BS, one of those panic emails that made the rounds a few months ago. It's a US bill that sets up a stronger food safety department, separate from other departments. None of the listed bullets is in the bill. The USDA'a food inspection section was gutted some time ago, the reason that we keep getting e. coli problems from crops like green onions, strawberries and greens. The bill would put inspectors back into the fields, a good thing for the US food supply. Why so interested in US policy?
