One of the more humorous, in retrospect, sailing adventures happened only a few hundred yards from the harbor entrance in Westport harbor.
It was a hot, sultry day in early August and there was a strong hint of thunderstorms in the air along with no wind. We decided to anchor in the protection of the western most Norwalk Island. There is Hanford rock to worry about on the way into the protected spot. This rock is about 3 feet under water and has no distinguishing features above water to identify its whereabouts. Unfortunately, many local boaters have discovered the exact location of this rock and it is an excellent source of revenue for the local boat yards.
We made it in safely, dropped anchor and planned to read and relax. After about an hour, a rather decrepit old motor boat came out of Westport harbor and dropped anchor nearby. Two men and a woman, young adults, got into a dinghy and went to shore with one of the young men returning and leaving the couple to take a walk on the island.
About a half hour later, a thunderstorm started to approach with large booms, cracks of lightening and the usual gut wrenching fear accompanying the approach of a thunderstorm when you are on the water.
It began to rain and the couple on the beach proceeded to strip naked and start to swim back to the boat with their clothes in hand. A good Samaritan on a jet-ski (LOL) approached the young lady and offered her a ride back to her boat. He took her clothes first, brought them back to the boat and returned to pick her up.
She got on the back of the jet-ski and the two of them proceeded to ride around the harbor. When they passed our boat she stood up to give us a good flash –LOL. I stood up and told my wife I was going to flash her back on the next pass and she proceeded to tell me in no uncertain terms that I would be having a very bad month if I did that.
Well – rather than face Mafalda’s wrath I decided to pull up the anchor and head back to our dock. While we were heading back, the jet-ski came by to give us another flash. I was a little distracted, to say the least, and managed to find the exact spot of Hanford rock!
This turned out to be a bad trip back to the harbor even though we escaped damage. Even the people on the beach near our club could tell how angry my wife was. Even with all my experience in local waters and sailing in general, a naked woman still takes precedence over navigation – LOL.
