Can moderators be guilty of abuse?

I think they can be and frequently are.

They abuse their power by stifling disagreement for the sake of everyone just "getting along".
That is a happy state of agreement in which I, for one, do not agree.

mike: those posting supply the site content. If any of us was sufficiently annoyed with MH site moderation we would ( or should) be using a site with patient-controlled moderation of content (and a lot less toilet paper ads per Kb of content), I mutter about this but never take the initiative to act on it...

portann: I agree about MH's immense success across many forums but am not sure the archives are such  a good indicator of current moderating standards. Seems heavier-caliber pruning shears have been in use for a while now. Ultimately, content moderation is always going to annoy someone. If most have no stake in why/how the moderation is done it'll annoy more people.

Actually, MH does not stifle disagreement; the current and archived threads are testimony to that.

For example, you often disagreed with Jmjm and those threads are still alive and well, standing here for everyone to read.

Respectful disagreement is A-okay with MH and thousands of threads demonstrate this.

The only things missing are abusive posts, along with others that are caught up collaterally.

MH is immensely successful across the wide spectrum of diseases it addresses and provides tremendous support for countless people.

I almost always agree with you, but this is one time I do have to disagree because I have read 2 posts today that got pulled, and there was nothing insulting or degrading, unlike the thread we all read last week that went on for days.

I admit the possibility that the posts got pulled today because they got reported, instead of MH choosing on their own to pull them. I really think that when someone reports something, somebody in charge should at least read it to see if it is personal preferences or violating MH policies.

This is the one that cracks me up.

Basically what is being said is “this is an idea and we will pick and choose which one’s we will enforce and which one’s we won’t.

Enforcement of the Rules

The G8/G20 meetings are taking place in Toronto, Canada right now. Being a free and democratic country, protests were expected and designated protest areas for lawful congregation provided and some off-limits areas designated.  Large groups of protesters gathered and were a rainbow of various causes.  Out of that group of protesters, suddenly there were those dressed in black from head to toe, faces covered who were smashing windows, setting cars on fire and generally raising havoc and causing damage.  The police felt it necessary then to close off ALL protesting and disperse with everyone to keep the peace.  The next day, not even lawful congregating of protesters was allowed and will likely continue for the rest of the summit due to the actions of some.  There were no actual reasons stated for what the Black Bloc tactics were enlisted for only various theories floated as to what their possible motives might be.

Regardless, they DID do those things and as a result, legitimate protest has been permanently stifled or will be much more regulated and limited.  Not fair to the many who were causing no trouble.  But necessary to keep the peace.

That's the way I see it here lately.  I've had posts pulled simply because they were potentially inflammatory where in the past they might have been allowed to stand.  I've accepted that in favour of peace.  I don't like it .. but I understand that the tactics of some have ruined it for the many.  Until those subversive tactics change, this is what we're stuck with here.  So the question for each one becomes are you part of the problem or part of the solution.  I try to ask myself that and I have to admit, sometimes I'm part of the problem though not intentionally and in those cases, I submit to my post getting pulled until those who forget this is a Hep C support forum and not their personal playground get their act together.

They pulled my post on this thread and all I said was that I had seen a post earlier that they pulled that didn't have any insults in it. Imagine that!

Now you have me scared! I thought the second post on this thread WAS my first one... don't tell me I posted and I can't remember it. That is highly possible because last week I discovered I had sent an email while waiting for my sleeping pills to kick in, that I had no memory of sending.

Wonder what else I'm doing?

Are moderators human??

Then the answer is yes.

I like the idea that personally insulting attacks can be removed, as it hurts people, although sometimes it might be better to let them stand a while, so that others can see for themselves when someone is being a phoney or has their claws out.

However, I think the idea that one can never say anything negative may be a tad over zealous, because if there is never the ability to say when things are incorrect or not right, then how can we have honest discourse about anything?

As long as we aren't singling out any one person, I think we need to be able to discuss, and should be able to discuss anything. That's what free speak is all about.
Likewise saying a behavior is incorrect should be acceptable, but saying a certain person is bad should not be.

The way I taught my children was, YOU are not bad, but this behavior is.
Nuf said.

I myself personally believe there could possibly be a changing of the guard with the moderators, maybe all new, maybe some trainees just learning the ropes ( that would explain posts that are are reposted after previous deletion). I believe there is no real Emily, who knows how many people moderate under that name.Emily sure can't be here 24/7. I believe there should be some moderation and I hope things balance out well in the future with this issue. There are sites I'm on regarding other things with no moderation and I'd sure hate things here to turn into an anything goes site like those. Sick and frightened people are the ones I'm sure everyone agrees are who deserve the best site possible.
Peace ...

There are lots of unmoderated forums, most of us belong to at least one of them.  That is why it's such a shame that we can't really have civilized discussion (even arguments) in here any longer. Oh Lord how much I have LEARNED by having to admit I was WRONG after listening to some of the debates!

Yes, of course they do.

I don't know what the criteria is, whether they respond to people hitting the abuse button or what. They often seem to miss the fact that when people are sick or on meds it effects thier emotions. And perhaps that is when people need the most support, and should not have thier posts thrown off because someone else is offended.

This is a forum. Nobody has to read anything they don't like.
Why we even have the free choice to get off the computer!

I think it is more oldtimers being reported, not the newcomers that are treating

Well, what do I know anyway? I just swooop in every now and then.

Problems over censorship on this forum are nothing new.
Oldtimers can be also be doing treatment ( do we call them retreaters?) though I'm not up on who is and who isn't.

Personally I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. Enjoy.

MH did not used to have heavy-handed moderation.
MH did not used to have colorful toilet paper ads.

Hi there -

I assure you there is an Emily, a real one, and while I don't work 24/7, I do work a lot.  There is also a Steve, a Claire and a Thea.

:)
