I have to laugh, if you do a search for flying pig, it brings you right to this thread. Someone will probabbly do a google search and end up here some day!! LOL! (although, I usually don't leave pics up for very long.
Well, the amazing flying pig is taking shape, slowly, a true exercise in problem solving...and the pay ***** (g)..Posted a couple of pics, long ways to go, not sure if it will be finished this Winter or not..might have to wait till the next.

Why thanks Denise. Maybe next year we do a German Shepard themed whirligig!!! LOL!
Well, I've been busy like one of Santa's Elves out in the workshop, I've begun puting paper to wood as they say (do they say that?. hmmm) Have decided to build the flying pig project out of a softer hardwood, poplar, brass and 2 nylon bearings. The poplar is some sweet stuff to work with, I almost hate to paint it!! . Still working out the final shape of the wings, think they are going to work similar to a set of rowboat oars, driven with the camshaft..we'll see...........;*)
I posted a couple of pics, of slow but steady progress.
Great picture smaug!!----hope you are doing well, I'm sick of Winter already..;*)
MerryBe, you are correct, I just couldn't do it--unless of course I had John passed out in the corner (but that wouldn't be kid friendly).
Thank goodness for the internet and photoshop LOL, I am not all that artistic. So through copy, cut, pasteing, running to the post of copy machine..I have somewhat of a pattern to begin with, kind of winging it as I go along, still have no idea on the mechanics of the whole thing. I going to somehow put machinery inside this pig..How big do the wings have to be for a pig to fly? Deep question....;*)
Posted 2 pics of the paper template, we'll make this a forum project, all comments welcome..Chose which pic looks better for wing location 1 or 2...I wanted the wings small, but what do you think of the scale of the body to wings...wings smaller, bigger? (they get to big and I'll have to have an 8ft propeller! ..
you can't be serious!!!
Limiting the Jag's movements ??? say it ain't so!!
hahaha. When pigs fly.....I love it. I was thinking too much about how the things looked at that fair. Great, Great.
It was supposed to be jellyfish. I thought just about everyone heard of "Sponge Bob Square pants"
Pro, are you a Pink Floyd fan?

Thanks for all the suggestions..............;*) pro
Stay tuned.
Sponge who? And what is a "Jellyfich"? you can tell I have no grandkids.....;*)
While the links I posted show some wonderful ,whimsical machines, most of them would not hold up to real world conditions, ie., like placing one them on top of a cupula. Thin plywood, coathangers and piano wire just won't cut it up here in the mountains , and you also have to keep in mind one will be viewing it from both sides as wind directions change, which makes designing them even tougher.
But you'll be happy to know, it came to me @ 2:00am this morning, like a flash in the night, a shot in the dark...................drumroll...................a flying pig.
Front and back legs will move, and the wings will flap up and down....................somehow (lol)
I just might have to travel to Nova Scotia for the next whirligig festival, looks like a great group of folks...
I know you said the "older stuff" but what about Sponge Bob Squarepants, 2 legs and 1 arm moving with jellyfish net. On Bikini Bottom Beach. with one or a few jellyfich bobbing just out of reach. They would actually be easy characters to make and Patrick, gary and Mr Crabbs & Squidward could be standing around.
Can you tell I have grandkids??

Those are really neat!! Now I gotta think
Denise
edit-better link, fancier machines

Keep the ideas coming...
Denise, perhaps this link will give you a good idea of what a whirligig is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTGGSdjsKOU
Moose pulling skvirrel from hat and Natasha doing hip wiggle. (Proper movement of hips requires at least a three element cam.)
From FLguy's link:
"Today, large volumes of traditional American whirligigs are produced in stamped and painted metal in China and are widely available across the country."
That kinda says a mouthful if you ask me.....
Elvis. Think you can make that one leg whirl around just right?
I believe it is a contraption that goes around and around and around
in circles....making us dizzy? right pro?
The three Stooges?

Can I ask what a whirlygig is???
