I just noticed today, about the third time using the scalp treatment, and i had about an inch of redness from my hair to the forehead, i did not have any itching, but it looked horrible, i showered again to remove treatment and took about 2 hours to get back to normal, the treatment smells really bad like a dirty wet dog, i dont know if maybe the treatment is expired or bad.
I went through this nightmare tonight. I tried Nioxin - Hair Thinning while in the shower. I applied it liberally to damp hair (not a good idea) and massaged it in. After a few minutes, I noticed a severe burning sensation on my face and neck so I looked in the mirror. Everywhere that Nioxin touched or had ran onto was sunburnt red. My arm was covered in spots from combing it through my hair and my back and forearms were covered in bright red streaks.
I got back in the shower and rinsed under cold water for 30 mins (chemistry lab safety: slow the reaction down). Dried off with an uncontaminated towel, took a couple Benadryl, and greased up with Aloe. The redness has mostly disappeared after 2 hours, likely because of the antihistamines, but my heart rate is still quite high.
I will not be using any Nioxin products ever again. This was a terrible experience and I am glad the symptoms are not long lasting. I will be sticking to hair fibers and thickening paste.

I used the Nioxin 3 "3 step process". I experienced the dark redness and hives on my face, neck, shoulders, chest, and back after just one use. Two days later I had terrible gas and abdominal pain. My doctor put me on a 10-day course of Cipro AND Flagel. I have been sick for 4 weeks. Question: Has anyone had intestinal problems which they believe may have been caused by the Nioxin?
I hope you stopped using this as it put me in the hospital for 3 days and caused my eyelids to swell imparing my perefial vision. That in turn caused me to have eyelid surgery. This happened last July and I am still under a doctors care. I have asked for a fair settlement as have over 18,000 in medical bills and they don't even want to cover out of pocket expenses. Please share your story with me at ***@****
I ended up being hospitalized for 3 days and then having to have an eyelid lift surgery as the swelling from my reaction never went down and it affected my perefial vision. I have had over 18,000 in medical bills and am still under a doctors care. This happened July 2014. Would love to share the pictures what I looked like after using the product. Please share your story with me. I have asked proctor and Gamble for a fair settlement of what I have gone thru and they don't even want to cover out of pocket expense. Please write me at ***@****
This same thing has happened to me twice. The first time I used it I didn't notice anything. Th second time I noticed what you are describing but I was not sure ti was the Nioxin, so I tried it one more time and let it run a little, and boom, my neck got red right were the Nioxin ran down. I am afraid it might be happening in my scalp, and I cannot see it. I put Benadryl cream on it and it went away.
Yes I just started with Nixon 5 shampoo and conditioner and on both occasions within 10 minutes have broken out in a red ras and hives on my neck and shoulders. Took Benadryl once but am thinking of discontinuing my use of these products.
This is a real old post from like 12 yrs ago!
Nioxin used to be a good product but like other companies they changed the formulation. I liked the original
I just had the exact same thing happen with the serum. It may have been the first time it had run down my face but there is a red stripe down the side of my face and a round mark on my neck. I think it has probably been doing this on my scalp but I thought the tingling feeling was the product working. No more Nioxin now that I see what it has done to my face!
Wow! I am so glad to find/read this!! I started using Nioxin about 3 weeks ago and have had major burning, itching, hive-like bumps and redness on my chest and neck. I use the shampoo and conditioner in the shower so it runs all over my body. I couldn't figure out what was going on as I don't normally have any skin problems at all. I kept trying to ignore it but just today though...."maybe it's just me, but it might be a good idea to look this up". Wowza! Will try an experiment and not use it to see if this clears up. So glad we have sites like this.
I used Nioxin system 3 for the first time today, shampoo and conditioner worked fine, experienced no issues there. However, when I applied the scalp treatment leave in spray i immediately noticed a burning, large red rash on the parts of my body that came in contact, my shoulder, arms (i have long hair). At first when I noticed this I didn't know if it was from the shampoo, conditioner or the spray. So in my process of elimination, I sprayed the leave in spray on my foot - in a matter of seconds my foot started to burn and come out in a rash.
If you are considering using this product, test all of the supplies (Shampoo conditioner and the spray) on parts of your body and a little on your scalp BEFORE you use. everyone is different, therefore everyone will have different reactions. Needless to say, that bottle of spray is not in the bottom of my garbage bin!
So in January week 4 or 5 this year I bought Nixoin starter kit(number 3 or 4 - dont remember). I started using it every 2-3nd day. After 6-7 weeks I suddenly saw white hairs in my own hair (dark Brown). I lifted up my hair and there it was - a big red mark with about 30-40 white thick hairs (like old-woman hair, some with curls). I went to the doctor who said that my skin has been burned/hair sack. It is now oktober, soon november - my hair has still not grown back in Brown collor - still white. Wella Norge(Norway) Protector & Gamble does nothing to help me out With this situation. STAY AWAY FROM NIOXIN!! Most likely I have to get hair transplanted. The worst thing With all of this is that I easily could have gotten this rash/white hairs all over my head.
oops her photos are gone but I remember it grew back very thick
Hi I just saw your message, Bocep is no longer here but I wanted to let you know her hair grew back in and looked great.
I lost my hair as well and mine grew back in curly and thicker than it has been in years.
You can click on Bocep's name, she used to have a picture of her new hair
Good luck to you

Would love to hear from you
I also used nioxin level 3 scalp treatment which resulted in red hives allover my head, back and side of my face followed with a intense burning. I immediately jumped back in the shower to rinse it off and took Benadryl. My hair has also become extremely thin on top which may be as a result of using this. It is toxic! I don't have senestive skin or normally react to anything, but this stuff caused a very scary reaction!
Started using this in august and at first had no issues. Then one day broke out with hives and redness all over neck, back, legs.Could not understand it and thought it might be stress.DEAD WRONG!!!!!!!!!This junk is dangerous.Hope more people post their issues.I used a shampoo for hair loss named Couvre and it was perfect. They discontinued it and my wife suggested this.Spencer Forest has a shampoo called topix which I had no trouble with and that is where im headed.
During Hep C Tx, the Riba causes our skin to be irritated by things that have fragrances, or even the sun.
Just the name of that stuff sounds harsh, and I can only imagine the smell of it...it doesn't read "cruelty free, organic, not tested on animals"..that's for sure!
If people are concerned about hair loss ( I felt helpless when mine started coming out in strands of 12-20 hairs, when I ran my fingers thru it) then I
can say that I had some success with the vitamin B called Biotin. But I didn't take it until after I stopped Tx (which strangely, is when my hair started falling out, around 4 weeks post tx)
Rather then risk a horrible medical reaction, I would opt for a pretty scarf, wrapped strategically around the head, or a cute hat, not to mention there is a wig fad going on these days~
Are all the posters here keeping records, and going to their doctors? This product sounds insane.
It obviously is still for sale, so a letter from a doctor or a consumer to the company would illicit some response I would think. I would be interested to hear if any one of these posters has taken this further.
I am also wondering, if you are all on treatment for HCV, if perhaps it's a product that can't be used with ribavirin, or Interferon, or one of the 2 PI's.
Only one person has posted with no problems after use.
I know this post is up to 10 years old, but I am assuming that Fleish has had a recent episode.
I used the leave-in scalp treatment spray and within minutes my entire head and scalp and forehead and neck became bright red and it burned so immensely that I had to stay in an ice cold shower for 45 minutes before going to an emergency care facility. It eventually subsided, but was very traumatic, especially in front of my 1 year old son. I now have flashbacks every time I put anything on my skin, especially my own face or head or even my son's skin.
I too have been effected by this shampoo. My husband brought it home a couple of weeks ago per his sytlists suggestion. About a week later, he was complaining of a burning sensation around his ears and he had swelling around his eyes. We thought that he had either been bitten by something or had a severe sunburn on his ears and face as we had been outdoors the prior weekend.
He suggested that I used the shampoo as he thought it was making his hair soft. So I tried it. Loved it, until this morning. Not sure if it was the shampoo or the scalp treatment, but right after I used it, I noticed a burning sensation all over my face and a red rash down the side of my neck starting at my ears as well as a rapid pulse rate. I jumped back in the shower to re-wash my hair with a different shampoo and rinsed out anything that was left in my hair. Its a terrible feeling, and I am afraid I will have this side effect for at least a week.
Needless to say, neither of us will be using this shampoo/treatment again!
