I also wish that there was some way that the life insurance companies wouldn't be able to prevent you from being able to get even a simple whole life insurance plan, when you have something like Hep C. Or like my son with mental illness. I get turned down repeatedly for life insurance when looking for either of us. It's so incredibly frustrating because these plans will advertise, "no physical required" and then, when you check with them, it's all a big, huge lie. They end up saying that they won't cover you because you have Hepatitis, or they won't cover you because you suffer from mental illness (like for my son). As far as health insurance goes, before I went on SSDI, my husband was paying for private insurance for the both of us and it was costing him over $4,000.00 a month on a plan that was carried over from his former job, all because of me and my Hep C. He was a week late on one payment and boom, they were all too happy to have a reason to dump us and then, after that, nobody would cover me because of the Hep C. SOooooo frustrating all around. I SOoooo much want to be done with Hep C. Susan400
Duh....sometimes I'm just so slow on the uptake. LOL!!!
Have your friend apply to an insurance company...get denied
waa laaa there you have it.
I meant to add that Oregon has a program, the Oregon Health Plan, for the working poor who just cannot afford insurance but with the decline in the economy those who apply for it are put into a lottery. Twice a year some lucky people are chosen and get coverage. The others suffer on and hope their number comes up in the next lottery drawing. What a cruel joke!!

I followed the link and read the article because I have a friend that needs a heart operation and has no insurance. She's self employed and works hard for not enough money but has diabetes and now this heart thing. I was so disappointed in how the article explains the law. A person must have a denial letter from an insurance company dated within the last six months in order to qualify for this program. She hasn't applied in years because of the diabetes. I honestly cannot see how this new set of gradually enforced laws is going to help any of the working poor. We needed single payer. This "health insurance reform" is a joke. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out when it finally all comes into effect in 2014.
