NY:... I spent about 2 hours there answering questions and asking questions and let me tell you - he got right on the phone with my regular doctor and offered his assistance to him helping manage my care for free.

Then he told the doc how informed and well educated I was on hep and that I knew things that my GI didn't even know...so the GI felt bad and then Dr. J. put him on his mailing list or something and he offered to help my GI learn the latest studies etc.

Now, what kind of doctor takes time out of his day to do that?...

I'd say that is a very compassionate doctor. Wouldn't be surprised if he makes less money spending two hours with a patient then some of the liver mills where you may bet 15-20 minutes and often only get to see a NP. It's a different way to practice and a choice many excellent and compassionate doctors tend to make.

BTW the fact that he doesn't accept insurance doesn't mean you can't submit his bill -- actually I'd guess his office will do it for you -- to your insurance company. What it generally means is that he doesn't accept direct consignments from the insurance company and can therefore aford to spend as much time as he wishes on his patients.

PS Sorry about the double post

$600 was for the evaluation which meant spending almost 2 hours with his PA and himself.  That is not the regular doctor visit office visit type thing.
It would not cost that much each time and you could submit it.

During that 2 hours he answered questions about my specific disease (geno1a and geno1b both) and also let me ask questions for people in here who had nothing to do with my case.  If I had needed another hour he would have let me stay.

He is the best doctor I've ever been to in my life and if you can afford him go to him. Otherwise what I did was go to a GI and then when I needed a second opinion to extend treatment I went to him for the evaluation which was $600.  I do not knowhat regular visits cost. The insurance company DID pay all of my tests that he did though.  You would just have to pay regular visits then have the insurance do them OUT OF NETWORK.

He is such a kind caring wonderful man.  On the cutting edge who has made his entire career out of helping us - not just a job to this man.  I spent about 2 hours there answering questions and asking questions and let me tell you - he got right on the phone with my regular doctor and offered his assistance to him helping manage my care for free.

If you are looking for the brightest kindest doctor of them all (in my opinion) the one who has been lead investigator of most of the big studies (therefore understands them better than most) than this is the doctor that you want.

I'd be glad to answer any questions about him I could.

You just have to be willing to submit his bills out of network and get paid back less on the office visits - but insurance will pay the tests and meds.

Hope that helps.

PS YOu don't have to participate in any of the studies - you can do regular SOC with him.

He is MARVELOUS.

What's up with that? He doesn't take insurance? He sounds like a real compassionate guy. Mike

He's one of the best in the country, but as with many docs who run trials, there can be a potential conflict of interest so always do your own rsearch and ask the hard, informed questions. Don't believe he takes insurance directly. $600 for first visit I've read but well worth it. Breing all your records including original biopsy slide set if you have it.
