The doc did stress Turmeric as a good thing, also artichokes. According to Tibetan medicine I have a cool disposition and "hot" foods would be good for me if it weren't for the disease. They do use auyrevedic principles as well which do include hot stuff. It is difficult because I'm not supposed to eat chocolate for one, sour foods, oils, I'm trying to adjust to the diet. Tibetan medicine sees the digestion as the central point. At 60 yrs old I'm concerned about my health, but almost more concerned about my spiritual health. Easy to say that while I'm not experiencing any dramatic symptoms of ill health. I did recently fall from a ladder, and fractured my back its been 4 months and I'm still a little compromised. Reminds me that we are mortal vulnerable beings.
This doc is actually working with a patient who is on the transplant list and has been able to help him get his meld score down. Thats about all I know.
Oh yea, I know the feeling......not only could I not eat the stuff but couldn't stand the smell of spicy stuff cooking
My tastes were altered during tx as well. I think I spent a month eating potato pancakes and oatmeal.
I also ate a cheesecake a week for a month, now I can barely eat more than one small slice.
Your taste buds will return.
Mary4now: They don't grow anything hot and spicy in Tibet, they'd have to import it from India or I suppose now, from China.
The G.I. I saw in Bangkok said to eat hot peppers and turmeric. He claims they're good for the liver.
I do agree with the philosophy of treating the whole being. It makes sense.
Hi,
I had a session with a Tibetan Medical Doctor a combination of Auyrevedic (sp) and Chinese medicine as well as Tibetan herbs etc. This doc works with western docs as well and told me to stay away from anything "hot" gave me a whole list. This goes with the theory of inflammation, so nothing that supports that heat of inflammation. I live in NM and we have some great "spicy" stuff, but I am weaning myself off all of it.
She also said no lemon, to use lime instead it is more alkaline. I really appreciated the philosophy of this medicine to treat the whole being.

Don't know if you received my thanks on your answer to the mouth sores but they seem to be dissipating.
Cheers!

I lived in Tokyo for 10 years where there are some of the most amazing chefs from around the world... could just eat anything with a 10+ spice rating for decades when only a brave few would follow.
During treatment I gave all that up, just couldnt tolerate anything over mild. Really missed it. Got a lot of stomach trouble too. Been off and "cured" for a while now and just starting to test myself with spicy foods over a 7.
I am back in a small town and they dont do spicy food much around here anyways so...
All tastes were terribly amplified when I was treating. Even pepper was too hot. I'm used to every day eating the hottest chilies around...
Sweet was too sweet, salty too salty and sour foods tasted disgusting. Apples were delicious. They tasted really good.
They should be gone in about another week when the interferon starts to leave your body - that is what is causing them. I had them too and they are so painful..........but I'm back to fire eating again no problem!
I am 1 week post TX and have painful mouth sores due to treatment. Has definitely changed my eating habits as I just love spicy foods and cannot tolerate them in my mouth. OUCH!!!!!! It seemed to go away while I was in the hospital with pneumonia at week 21 due to I.V. antibiotics but has reared its ugly head once again. I've heard it will dissipate over time and things will get back to normal. TX has definitely changed my life!!!!!
Glad it's over!!!!!
I typically eat brutally hot food. Put up 5 quarts of jalapenos en escabeche a few weeks ago. I make habanero jelly for ***** and giggles. That said, I ate Indian food my second or third week of tx and was sicker than a dog with projectile vomiting. The only thing I wanted on shot day was a piece of plain chicken. I ate cashew butter every morning with my pills and tolerated pasta with light sauces fairly well. When I finished tx, I craved spice like a mad woman for weeks.
The only thing I still can't really stomach since tx is sushi. I used to love it but got really sick watching a friend shovel raw salmon. Now I can take it in very small amounts and I wrinkle my nose when friends suggest sushi night.
I had the tongue ulcers and that prevented me from eating just about anything I used to enjoy. It was such a bummer. But I ate lots of ice cream which was fun.
Two weeks post interferon and the problem completely went away. Then...I never stopped eating for a year - took a while to loose that weight I"ll tell you!
I couldn't eat spicy food either. Even mild salsa would set my mouth on fire and I didn't have the terrible mouth sores some people get. One of my favorite foods in the world is Carrabba's calamari but I wouldn't eat it while on tx because the marinara sauce burned my mouth and eating calamari without marinara is like eating lasagna without cheese.
I don't have any problems now that I'm no longer treating.
