Why is headache worse when lying down?

That is certainly not true of a migraine. The last thing I would do is sit up.

If your headache is tension related, this may be caused by neck muscles.  It is also possible that you have inflamed nerves on the back of your head.  You can tell this if you feel behind your ears for the two lumps at the base of your skull and they are very tender.  I have experienced this, and lying down actually puts more pressure on that area.  The best help I found was to use a cold pack (gel) on the area for 30 minutes at a time.  Stay away from heat.

  Hi....it could be that u have what is known as ICP intercranial hypertension.....when the pressure is high and u lie down u can feel worse...if the pressure is too low u feel worse when u stand or get up...so lying down would feel better.
The other possibility is sinus issues, lying down with this pressure can make u feel worse, so try to elevate the head of ur bed until the dr see u.
