An x-ray is inadequate to properly evaluate sciatica. An MRI of the lumbar region is necessary. That being said, there are specific exercises that can, under certain circumstances, relieve compression on the nerve. There are varying degrees of disc damage. Avoiding all lifting is a good start. The exercises must be taught in person by a trained rehabilitation specialist. It is difficult to learn them from the internet. He should sleep with a pillow between his legs and always lift properly. Avoid riding in a truck or a vehicle without good suspension. Acupuncture will relieve pain, but so will an electrical TENS device. A transdermal lidocaine patch worn for no more than 12 hours a day will also be helpful. Keep well hydrated and avoid muscle relaxants.
Eventually a procedure called a laminectomy may be required, however that is a long way down the road. Opiates don't help.
Usually the problem is episodic, and although the pain may be excruciating, rest and time will cause relief.
thank u so much for ur suggestions.. well hez taking rest since dat day it happend and also use to do wot doctors says..but just i was a bit worried dat y its taking too much tym to get recover......any ways thnx again.
The injuries may take a long time to heal, however the severity of pain is not an indication as to whether or not there will be complete recovery. Don't rush to surgery.
Nerve pain is a tough thing to endure. Caregiver is right, opiates do not touch this kind of pain. Gabapentin is a medication commonly prescribed for nerve pain. The dose is gradually increased and takes 2-3 weeks to achieve therapeutic blood levels and maximum efficacy. Amitriptyline is a another. It is a tricyclic antidepressant that works on nerve cells in the brain. Both medications have mild sedation effects but are non-addictive. Amiptriptyline is taken at night and Gapapentin is taken 2-3 times a day.
Anti-inflammatories are important for managing the tissue inflammation that surrounds the sciatic nerve. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAID's) like ibuprofen and toradol are helpful. However, anyone with a history of stomach ulcers or acid reflux should consult thier doctor first.
Accupuncture is a great idea! It's such an effective method of treating all kinds of ailments...physically and emotionally. It is often overlooked.
Well wishes to you and your Dad :o)
