What can it be?

Hello doctor,
I have had two abnormal MRI's compared over 2 years there are changes loss of signal and a differential diagnosis of demylenation.
My neurologist thought MS because of foot drop , balnce and gait problems, parathesis, and slurred speech that lasted 4 dyas..as well as vision issues. but when the LP came bback negative... she now says maybe mimi strokes?  Yes I smoke but am quitting,, and I have low not high BP... so even though I have had sx. come and go since 1994... still undx. Must bands be present to have MS?  My father had it and an aunt as well.
The neuro is perfectly happy to wait until next MRI in 6 mos.. but if I have MS shouldn't I be on some kind of treatment so it doesn't progess?
Thank you for your time and expertise.
Blessings
Ginnylou

Abnormal autoimmune response findings in CSF is not specific for multiple sclerosis and can also be  found in a number of other diseases. Also, 5-10% of patients with multiple sclerosis do not have these CSF abnormalities.
There have been literature on the benefits of early treatment of MS.  If you are concerned that you might have MS, you can opt to have a second opinion from another neurologist.
