This post is sooo old. I see no mention of possible surgical correction of buldging lumbar discs...Is surgery ever indicated? What are other possible treatments outside of epidurals and medication?
Many thanks!
Hi,
Spinal discs are soft cushion like structures that rest between the bones of the vertebrae. Discs are located between each vertebra and provide flexibility and shock absorption for the spine. When a disc is damaged, it may herniate, or push out, against the spinal cord and spinal nerves and compress them. A 'disc bulge' is a word most commonly used to describe a slight outpouching of the disc.
Spinal stenosis is a medical condition in which the spinal canal narrows and compresses the spinal cord and nerves. This happens in case of spinal degeneration that occurs with aging. It can also sometimes be caused by spinal disc herniation, osteoporosis or a tumor. In the neck and lumbar low back region it can be a congenital condition.
Severe, impairing stenosis of the cervical or lumbar spine should be treated with surgery, although there is often considerable chance for expectant and observant therapy for those who do not wish to undergo a surgical procedure.
Various factors have to be considered before deciding the treatment plan. Please consult a neurologist or spine surgeon to discuss the treatment plan. Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!.
