should I be concerned?

Hello, I am a 30yr old first year pharmacy student, and in my Anatomy class we learned that deviation of the uvula is indicative of vagal nerve damage; and deviation of the tongue to either side when you stick it out is also indicative of cranial nerve damage.  My question is my tongue deviates to the right when I stick it out and when I say Ahhhhhh, my uvula is deviated to the left.  Should I be concerned?  What does this mean?

Hi.

It would be premature to diagnose your condition as cranial nerve IX,X, XII dysfunction without a proper neurological examination.  There have been cases where the uvula is only mildly deviated yet the patient has no apparent neurological condition.

If you are concerned about this, it would be best to consult a neurologist and have an complete neurologic examination  done to determine whether your uvula and tongue deviations are truly pathological.

Hi sommerly,
I can understand your anxiety.
You are right in your examination, but it is always better to take an opinion from an experienced neurologist, before coming to a conclusion.
