Weakness / Spasms In Left Hand

For the past several months I have occasionally noticed that after periods of exertion my left hand starts to tremble and spasm.  Then for several hours afterward it will just feel weak and may spasm slightly if I try to squeeze hard with it.  Today the thumb on my left hand has been 'twinging' at its base constantly.   I am a right-handed 20 year old college student.  Should I chalk this up to stress or is there something more serious going on here?  Should I go in to see a doctor?

Hi,

These symptoms can be due to excessive stress. However it is important to rule out other possibilities like nerve compression as in carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy due to diabetes, thyroid dysfunction and B 12 deficiency. The possibility of peripheral vascular disease also needs to be ruled out.
This requires further evaluation so I will suggest you to see your GP.
Thanks

Hello,

If periods of exertion cause the trembling and spasms in your left arm, then it could be due to narrowing of blood vessels or may be due to calcium deficiency or sometimes cervical spondylosis. Sometimes parathyroid disorders may also cause similar symptoms. You may consult a doctor if symptoms persist. Also, it is essential that you quit smoking if you are a smoker.

My symptoms started with the twitch and progressed to trembling...Its probably nothing but I would recommend that you definitely go see a doctor...good luck!
