Hi there. Bone spurs are common in spine due to osteoarthritis, resulting from chronic pulling of ligaments over long time. Usually spurs form at facet joints, causing back or neck pain due to inflammation of facet joints and nerve irritation. EMG, NCV to exclude peripheral nerve compression, xray spine for arthritic changes and bone spur CT / MRI if any missed details on x rays. Management is with rest, anti inflammatory drugs, physical therapy, corticosteroid injections and surgery for the bony spurs only if the nerve or spinal cord compression is causing severe intractable pain and progressive neurological deficit. Take care.
In this special Missouri Medicine report, doctors examine advances in diagnosis and treatment of this devastating and costly neurodegenerative disease.
