I am torn about answering this question because I want to frighten your husband into stopping drinking.
That being said, probably, it won't make much difference. I say that because it depends if there was any tissue damage secondary to the compression of the brain before the blood and clot were removed. If the surgival intervention was done promptly, and there was no penetrating trauma or other complications, there is little liklihood of a post-injury seizure. If there was delay, and damage, such patients are prone to seizure post-injury.
If there is a liklihood of seizure then alcohol tends to statistically increase the threshold at which such seizures take place.
The craniotomy is a well-establish procedure and although it sounds awful, there are few complications in a healthy individual, the blood is drained and the pressure relived and everyone lives happily ever after.
hello booty 152...
I also had a sub. hem. and had a chriotomy.. a few years ago...About six months after my surgery i had drinks one night....walking home after about six drinks i had a seizure in the middle of the road....i was rushed to the hospital...and was told it was caused from the alcohol and from skipping my seizure med dose...so if ur husband does drink make sure he takes his anti seizure meds if he takes any...nways thats my experience with mixing drinks and brainsurgery....bad mix!!! I completely stoppd drinking now...it felt like somone had used my head as a punching bag the morning after drinks after my surgery...so no more it just hurts to much!!!
I can understand your worrying concern since fresh subdural hematoma can bleed, if someone is chronic alcoholic or on anticoagulant (aspirin, heparin) therapy. However, the major cause of subdural hematoma is a head injury and as he has recovered well from the condition so bleeding condition is almost nil from hematoma. But it is essential that alcohol in excess should be avoided as it can also delay in recovery of the symptoms of the hematoma, if he still has any. Hope this information proves helpful to you.
