With due respects muscle relaxants are contraindicated. Wrong train, wrong station, wrong destination.

The reason is that these relaxants cause loss of muscle tone. The loss of muscle tone causes the weight of the head to compress the nerves even more, increase inflamation, and cause a cascade of unhappy events. For the same reason a cervical collar is contraindicated. Absolutely positively the wrong way to go.

Mild axial traction, for short periods at several intervals throughout the day, and anti-inflammatories are the first step.  Axial traction. NOT a neck brace.  Oral steroids are sometimes prescribed, initially at 50 mg a day, (to damp down the inflammation at once) and then threy are tapered at 10 mg a day. After a while range of motion exercises through the limits of pain are usually necessary to prevent a frozen-shoulder.

I am hesitant to suggest DMSO (medical grade) because it is unapproved by the medical community, but topically applied in tiny amounts, with the greatest of care, it will significantly reduce inflammation. Ask your doctor.

Thank you for your question. Although without being able to examine you I can not offer you the specific advice on diagnosis and treatment that you need, but I would try to provide you some relevant information about your health concern.

It appears that your symptoms may be due to Cervical spondylosis or due to nerve irritation in the cervical (neck) spine. In few people, this pain may be referred and perceived as occurring in the back of head, shoulders, arms or chest, fingers, ear rather than just the neck. Other symptoms may include vertigo, nausea (dizziness) that you felt. Other symptoms are like neck pain and stiffness can be intermittent. It will be best that you consult a neurologist who would like to prescribe Pain killers, steroid and muscle relaxants. Other treatments could be cervical orthosis such as a soft cervical collar or stiffer neck brace to restrict neck movement. In addition, cervical traction may also be suggested by the doctor, if condition is severe. Hope this helps.

The most likely cause is compression of a cervical nerve, which is determined by an MRI.

Spinal stenosis or an old subluxion injury are often involved.

Treatment is generally anti-inflammatories and intermittant axial traction.

Diagnosis can be confirmed by lying flat on a carpet and having someone apply axial traction (pulling your head upwards in line with your spine). If the numbness and weakness instantly disappears you have compression of a nerve in the cervical area.

You really shouldn't let this go too long. If nerves are compressed long enough they can atrophy.
