numbness and tingling

I have episodes of numbness and tingling on my right side.  It starts with the right side of my mouth and finally involves my whole right side.  There is no pain with this.  It happens sometimes when I stand up and usually goes away when I sit or lie down.  I will have problems controlling my right hand and leg.  There is no drooping of the mouth.  I have no problems with vision or speaking.  I am 57 years old, 20 pounds overweight and I am a smoker.  I have hypertension controlled on medication.  Could I be having TIA symptoms?

Had an MRI of the head and neck six days ago but I am still waiting for results.  Symptoms on my right side are becoming worse.  My muscles feel like they are turning to stone.  I realize how that sounds, but that is the best way I can describe what I'm feeling.  All the joints on my right side are getting harder to move.  The muscles are so tight and hard and my right side feels like a vice tightening around my ribs.  I called my doctor this morning and told receptionist what was going on.  Still waiting for a call.

I went to my doctor and had the head CT performed.  It was clear.  Doctor says he has no idea what is causing my right sided numbness and tingling.  It has gotten worse.  It involves my complete right side from the top of my head to the bottom of my foot.  Dr. mentioned Guillian-Barre but said my symptoms being just the right side isn't common.  He is setting up an appointment with a neurologist but don't know how long that will be.  If you have any other ideas, I am certainly willing to listen.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.Numbness and tingling are abnormal sensations that can occur anywhere in your body, but are often felt in your fingers, hands, feet, arms, or legs. Possible causes for tingling and numbness are diabetes, TIA's, stroke, multiple sclerosis, seizures etc.
In case there is weakness in the limbs with tingling and numbness, as in your case, it could be mostly due to lacunar infarcts or TIA's.
I would suggest that you get a CTscan brain done and take an opinion of a neurologist.Risk factors for the occurence of TIA's are hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes etc. As you have the risk factors it is necessary to get evaluated.
All the best.
