Ventricular septal defects (VSDs) are very common in children. A 4 mm VSD in a term one month old would be considered small to moderate in size. If your child is gaining weight well, then there is at least a 50% chance that it could close during his lifetime. The holes do not increase in size; they stay the same or get smaller. Your doctor will also watch for complications like the infrequent development of a leaking aortic valve, or blockage developing under the aortic or pulmonary valves (can be seen when the VSD is located in the perimembranous region). As long as your child gets regular follow up for the heart during his growing years, it sounds like all should go well.
