42 & ttc

Hi everyone..I am new here.  I am 42 and ttc for the first time.  I was very optimistic at fisrt but now after trying for 5 months (it's probably not that long) and reading up on alot of things, I am getting a bit discouraged.  I have an appointment today with a specialist so I am hoping for some positive news...

Hi all you lovely ladies!!!

Firstly, I am so glad that everyone is still remaining positive!!!

A bit about me.  I turned 38 in June, but it seems my egg quality is not good. I'm a single choice Mum, having left a difficult marriage Dec '04, to pursue my dreams of motherhood.  By March '05 I was pregnant, having conceived my son at age 32yrs, 1st attempt at unmedicated IUI using a sperm donor. My Day 2 FSH was 6 & my E2 160. At age 34/35 I tried for 2nd baby. My Day 2 FSH was 6 but my E2 was 250. I had two failed unmedicated IUIs. Was found to be having premature LH surges. Third try Dr used buserelin & 100iu puregon. My daughter was conceived this cycle at age 35, same donor.
Have been trying for baby#3 since April '09, same donor. Day 2 FSH came back at 8.5 & E2 68. First IUI using buserelin & 100IU I grew too many follies, & cycle was cancelled.  Next two IUI cycles failed even though I stimmed fine with good sized follies.  Dec '09, Day 2 FSH was 10 & AMH .71. I tried 1st IVF Jan '10.  Used long prot, buserelin & puregon 300iu. Triggered at E2 of over 5000. Got 6 eggs, 4 fertilised. Two had fragmentation, ET done day 3 of one 'perfect' 8-cell. Other embryos developed fast & arrested before Day 5. Second IVF converted to IUI in May.  Antagonist protocol only grew three good sized follicles. Another negative! Tested FSH immediately after cycle, Day 2 was 14, E2 180. Next month, Day 2 FSH was 6.2, E2 a high 220! Finished 2nd failed IVF in June, using micro-dose flare.  Retrieved 8 eggs, 6 fertilised.  Triggered at E2 of 12,774. Again 50% of embryos had fragmentation.  ET done on Day 3 of one good 8-cell & one good 12-cell. Others arrested before Day 5.
Saw different RE at clinic this week, & am going to try 3rd IVF. He will use micro-dose flare again.  I wanted to try Estrogen Priming & also try using DHEA, but he said neither of these would help me.  He said I have good estradiol when stimming, so DHEA would only give me oily skin!  I'm worried I only have bad eggs left, even though I conceived pretty easily before. I'm wondering, if any of you have done IVF, how has your embryology been?  My RE says it's not much different to any other 38 yr old, but I think my embryology is pretty 'bad'.  I'm now taking supplements to try and improve egg quality, even though my clinic doesn't think quality can be improved, only enhanced by DHEA if a woman has low estradiol.  And, I am going to try DHEA for four months, even though my RE didn't prescribe it.  Is anyone else doing IVF?  My RE says I will still have some good eggs left amongst the 'bad' ones, but unfortunately, IVF often comes down to luck as to which follicels get recruited that cycle!

Kathy421!  Hi!!  And CONGRATULATIONS on your pregnancy!!!  It's so encouraging to see!!!  Is this your first child?  Also, did you succeed on your first IVF? How was your response and embryology?   Anything you can tell me would be much appreciated!!!  ALL THE BEST!

klm68!  I think you're doing the right thing, getting professional help.  I was worried about the menopause, my Mum reached it at a young 42!!!  BUT, she totally welcomed it, as she had three kids by the time she was 31 years, so she was totally fine with it.  My RE doesn't think I'm anywhere near approaching menopause, and should get there in my later 40s. ....I had two large dermoid cysts removed from my ovaries in 2000, but a laparoscopy in late 2007 showed my ovarian tissue was really good.  Also, my RE told me that the surgery wouldn't damage the eggs there, only reduce the tissue and quantity.

I pray all us ladies get our BFPs soon!!!!  Motherhood is wonderful!!  I'm glad I have a son and daughter, but hate feeling my family isn't quite complete!!  Take care all, and SSBD to everyone:0)

Yes, you have to stay positive.  I am 42 (soon to be 43 in 2 weeks) and am almost 24 weeks with a boy.  Went thru IVF - there are a lot of success stories, but it can be a very long and stressful road.

Good luck!

Welcome! I hope we can all support you on medhelp.  I am 41 ttc for a few years, but only joined medhelp in Feb.  The support does help as ttc is very lonely at times. Good luck!

Thank you adgal, very happy for you...I am so nervous because of my age and I am getting little signs which are making me think I am on the verge of menopause..which I am probably making to be worse than they are...my mom started at 54 (she passed away 11 years ago) and my aunt, her sister, told me she was arouynd 52-54, she said I was too young, but anyway it is very stressful on top of trying to conceive.  I had my first appt. today with OBGYN/gyn and she gave me some bloodwork sheets to test for ovulation for next month. Thanks again for the positive words.. :)

Welcome, and you are in the right place.  Stay away from the negativity.  Yes, it can be a bit more challenging for us "older moms to be" but there are so many success stories here, and yours can be one of them as well.  I just gave birth in January (just before my 41st birthday) to a healthy baby boy.  It took awhile, but was worth it!  It's great you are seeing an RE.  We are so fortunate to live in a time where we do have help available to make our dream come true.  I am now hoping to have another soon, and we are about the same age, so I am with you on this journey!
