My first son had a problem with his kidneys that was detected on the ultrasound. The doctor said that it is a soft marker for downs, but since it was the only thing detected, a soft marker on its own is not a cause for concern. It's when there are multiple signs detected.
Hi Ladies!! Just wanted to let you all know that the latest sonogram was clear; the spot is no longer there. My doctor also confirmed that all of my genetic tests that were done earlier in the pregnancy showed little to no indication of any genetic deformities specifically DS. Thank you all for taking the time to answer my question and share your experiences. We officially have 10 weeks left until we meet our sweet boy.
I have the same thing on my baby's heart at 20 weeks, my DNA testing was all negative. Trust me yes I was very very worried at first , but after all the research I e done in this, it was the only soft marker. It is common in pregnancy , esp in Asian women. If your ultrasound showed more markers then I might have concerns and if your DNA test was positive .
I personally wouldn't risk a amniocentesis, because u risk miscarriage, and I feel you'd be deveststed

My son has downs and didn't have this. I hope everything works out for you xx
My daughter was born with calcification on one of the heart arteries. It went away on its own when she was about 8 months old. Didn't cause any problems.
Hopefully all goes well with your little one!
Hi. I am 40 years old. At 20 weeks, my ultrasound showed two highlighted spots on baby's heart. All my genetic testing had come back showing that Downs Synrome was highly unlikely. We decided not to do any further testing. By week 32, the "spots" were gone.
What was the genetic testing done? Did you get a full DNA profile, complete with gender of the child?
If a DNA test shows no Downs syndrome, a soft marker is unimportant. If what you had was kind of a screening, that's a different thing.
This is also my 3rd pregnancy. My 16 and 12 year old daughters were both born absolutely healthy with no scares or abnormalities during the pregnancies. Thank you for your respones; I have a follow up sonogram on the 16th.
I had a marker with my third pregnancy for downs- we didn't do any further testing other then a follow up ultrasound. It's important to remember that the ultrasound isn't a reliable test for this, at all! I know it's hard not to worry, I've been there, but I do know that these tests tend to make moms worry more then are accurate.
My doc said that a single anomaly on the scan is not typically any cause for concern as many normal developing babies can have something pop up on the scan. I am 38 and turned down any genetic testing and doc said that was fine as long as nothing showed on scan or there were not multiple things on the scan then she would request further screening...so long story short I am pretty sure that you don't have anything to worry about. The blood screening is usually more accurate than the ultrasound.
