Lortab 5 for Interstitial cystitis Pain whilst PREGNANT

I am in my 36th week of pregnancy. About a month and a half ago my IC pain became so severe that I had to be hospitalized. I was prescribed Lortab 5 for pain and told to take one or two every four to six hours (as needed for pain). When I followed up with the doctor later she instructed me to try not to take more than one every six hours. I usually have to end up taking two at 5 am., two at 1 pm., and then again around 7pm. So obviously I am over the reccomended limit on some days. I noticed that when I go for a couple of days without taking them I feel the faintest symptoms of a mild cold. I don't have a cold but it feels like one is coming on.

My worry is that my baby (who will be born via c-section) next week will experience some type of withdrawl. I'm so worried and upset about it. I wonder if any nurses who frequent this board have any advice or past experience with anything similar.

I'm about to go insane with worry and guilt. My pain needed to be managed, however, because my blood pressure was way too high when I was experiencing the bouts of pain.

I realize that this probably isn't as dire as women who are on stronger pain medications (oxycontin, methadone, etc...) but I'm still concerned.

I am not taking Lortab but I too am taking medication. I was taking Ambien (sleeping pill) before the pregnancy and kept taking it - I could not sleep otherwise and even with the Ambien my sleep is poor. I discussed that with my OB-Gyn, it's a class B and is considered safe as long as I take the recommended dose. Still it's a sleeping pill! I have not yet thought too much about the delivery yet (I am only 18 weeks), but the possible withdrawal for the baby will have to be discussed. So I am curious what doctors will do for your baby!

Thank you for the response. I plan on speaking to my Dr. today. She may be disappointed, but I want our baby having the best care. I'll update this post soon.

again--thank you. It's refreshing to hear someone who understands that the constant pain is also a risk factor (especially was on my blood pressure)!

I'll be back on soon.

I haven't experienced this myself, but I understand your worry.  It is always risk vs. benefit in pregnancy. No, taking these meds over the recommended dosage is probably not the best thing for your baby, however it's not good for you (therefor) your baby to be in constant pain either.  I am hoping you are being straight up with your Dr.  I am not a professional, but I do have experience working with moms using pain meds, and other drugs during pregnancy so I have a bit of insight here.  There is a possibility of your baby going through withdrawal ( I don't know for certain mind you, but it's possible).  It is extremely important that you make sure your Dr. knows how much you have been taking.  If your baby is born addicted, there are extra steps the hospital can take to ensure his safety and well being.  Hiding it from your Dr. is probably the worst thing you can do.  They will know anyway, but won't be prepared.  I strongly urge you to talk to your OB. You should not try to handle this on your own.  I know you are probably afraid to talk about it, but it is critical information.  I wish you well.
