Alarming Nuchal Translucency Results

Hi everyone. This is my 1st post. I am 45 and pregnant with my 3rd child concieved naturally (without fertility meds. for the 1st time).
I had my 1st Trimester Nuchal Translucency test ultrasound yesterday and the Dr. said the baby has a 1:15 chance of having Down's Syndrome, based on a 3.0mm fluid measurement on the sides of the baby's neck (they couldn't get a profile view of the baby as he or she was facing my back). I know it's probably wishful thinking on my part, but has anyone heard of this type of measurement at 13 weeks that did not result in the baby having Down's?

I would not terminate or possibly harm the pregnancy, so I don't really want to have amnio and I know the 20 week structual ultrasound might show some structural markers (short bone length and heart defects) if the baby has Down's. I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience. Sigh.

I have heard that there is always a chance of false positive and like baby 1234 said the numbers sound scary but when you breakit down you still have 94% chance things will be fine.  good luck

I'm really sorry.. i know this must be very tough for you..

Considering they couldn't get all the views, is it too late to go back in and have it done again?

Best of luck to you and your family.

I had genetic counseling yesterday and the same test.  Our counselor said that she had known a patient with a 1 in 2 chance of having a baby with Downs and the baby was fine.  Made me wonder why we were even there.  I wouldn't sweat it yet.  Plus, an amnio is the only way to know for sure.

Scary as that number is, focus on the 14 out of 15 chance (94%) your baby does NOT have downs!

Sending hugs...
