hcg levels dropping

on April 4th-6th I took a HPT. AF was due on April3rd. all three test said neg no faint line.  I had what seemed like a normal period on April 6th. I started spotting on the 19th-21st (I have never done that before) I took a hpt on the 22nd. had a very dark positive. I started bleeding on the 23rd so I went to the ER. My hcg level was 869. they did an u/s and didn't see anything and told me my levels were low. I went to my ob on the 25th. I was still bleeding we did more blood test. 20th hcg level was 500 21st was 296 today is may 1st I stopped bleeding a few days ago. I don't go back to the ob for more blood test until the 4th. HPT still says positive. Im driving myself crazy! Is there any hope for this pregnancy? I just don't understand how on the 6th of April I tested neg on about 5 different test. but by the 23 my hcg was 869?? has this happened to anyone?

I tested negative then BOOM it shot through the roof, however, mine did not drop after that. It sounds like a possible miscarriage with the bleeding also involved. What does your doc think?
