Am I pregnant or about to have a miscarriage

I went to the doctors two weeks ago because I had started bleeding lightly and had been for 10 days, she suggested a pregnancy test and much to our delight it came back as positive but I was asked to repeat it in a weeks time.  I handed in a fresh, morning sample yesterday and was told today that the test was inconclusive.  Not that it was negative and that I have to hand in a fresh, morning sample in 48 hours for a re test.  I am now stressing that I have had a chemical miscarriage and they are not telling me the whole truth.  Has anyone else had this happen or have any ideas why a lab test couldn't pick up a positive or negative result.  Thanks

Thanks for your answers, I feel a little reassured from adgal and your experience with the tests at the doctors.  I have to hand in a sample tomorrow morning and I will ask for a blood test to be done as well.

I have gone from being so happy to being really down and now just don't want to think about it.  To scared to feel anything incase something has happened, its the waiting that kills you.

Everytime I have asked why I have to repeat the tests, all I get from the receptionist is she doesn't really know but thats what the duty doctor said.

Will let you know what they say on Friday.

Thanks for your help

I have to agree with seattleview.  A urine test is only qualatative, so it says yes or no.  I have never heard of a maybe with urine.  I find that very odd.  Urine tests vary in sensitivity, even the home pregnancy tests.  I have had negative urine tests at the Dr. and positive at home.  Found out I was in fact pregnant, and the Dr.'s test was not as sensitive as the home test I was using.  Blood tests measure HCG levels and can tell you far more.  Most Dr.'s will do 2 or 3 blood tests, each 2-3 days apart.  If HCG levels are rising (typically they double every 48 hours or so), that is an indication that the pregnancy is so far doing well.  If they are not rising, or are going down that is an indicator that the pregnancy is not viable.

As for bleeding in early pregnancy, that is not uncommon.  It is a possible symptom of loss, but many women (myself included) bleed during first trimester and all is just fine.

Personally, I would be requesting bloodwork.  Ask them for a Beta/HCG test, and a second one 2 days later.  That will give you a whole lot more information, and faster.

I hope that all is well, and wish you all the best.

I don't understand why they aren't doing blood tests on you instead of urine tests? They can get much more of a definitive answer from blood.
