uffff what to do

So they have found some radiation in the milk in Washington and California and I am smack dab in the middle in oregon so I am sure it has to be in the milk here to.  They say it is safe to drink but do they know???  My baby girl lovessss milk!  How can I give it to her if it contains radiation???   Are they telling us everything???  Do they know?  How will it affect her in the future????  What would you do?  What will you do?

I am not worried about the current radiation levels in food/milk in the US. But I am worried that these reactors are going to have complete meltdown and then I will be really worried about our food!
Today I bought several boxes of baby formula and jars today as an emergency stock. And if there is no meltdown from the reactors, then this stock will be our earthquake emergency stock as we are overdue for a major earthquake here.

They say it is very small.. I am not a paranoid gov't fearer but I don't think they always tell us the whole truth...  and what effect it could have on a growing baby probably has not been tested.  We are also being exposed to it in the constant rain we receive over here and little ammounts over time add up...   it is in the milk because dust particles carried over here and then got rained down into the ground and the grass the cows ate that grass and thus have it in their milk.  But that same logic will say that it will be in all the food that grows here because it is in the ground...  now it is in the ocean at high levels that will be dispersed into our fish and sea life...  I just don't know I don't worry for myself I worry for my babies exposure

I was reading something about that recently.  I was so surprised!  Apparantly there is legislature pending to deal with that issue, but who knows when it will actually be pushed through.  Nola, mum2beagain is in Canada like me.  Not sure if the law is the same in the US, but bears looking into for sure.

I still have some of the soy formula, and it doesn't look like it comes from Asia.  It looks like it came from the US.  I guess that doesn't necessarily mean anything though.

I also saw that the radiation is very small amounts and not in any way shape or form dangerous.  Still...I think a little extra caution is not a bad thing.

I think that the milk is probably fine to drink and the levels really are low - I think that FDA is watching this closely and does not want the liability of okaying dangerous dairy products. So I would drink the milk, but I do have to admit that I would probably not give it to my son - because why expose him to even small amounts of radiation if I do not have to.  Soy milk is an option - and it is not exported from Japan - Japan exports very little food and America is the top grower of soybeans, followed by Brazil.  You could also opt for milk that came from cows further to the east - that is if we can tell where the milk actually came from - what mum2beagain said it scary.

I watched the news about this, the amount is tiny, and a simple chest xray exposes you to over 18000 times more radiation than has been detected in the US or Canada. We are not going to be able to escape this radiation in any way shape or form, it escaped into the air and now into the sea water, it is there, it is in our food chain, luckily in the US and Canada we will only be subjected to tiny miniscule amounts that likely won't affect us. Adgal just because something says it is made in Canada/US it doesn't necessarily mean that the ingredients were grown in Canada or the US, that is what annoys me so much about food labeling over here, they do not have to legally stae the origin of our foods, if it was processed and pakages here they can label it "made in Canada". When I worked in food retail in the UK it was a legal requirement that the origin of a food was clearly stated. We stocked up on rice, soy, pasta and lots of other dry groceries as soon as the news hit of the earthquake because it makes sense that the food chain is about to get contaminated from this disaster. It is only a matter of time I think befroe some food's coming out of Asia are deemed unfit for consumption and that will send food prices rocketing.

Are you sure all of it comes from Asia?  I am fairly certain the soy milk (actually, it was soy formula as we wanted the calories) is made here.  I tend to watch for that just because of all the food production problems out of Asia.  Hmm...now I am wondering.  I will have to have a look and check.  I certainly agree with you though, I wouldn't be buying any food product from Asia right now.  I will be double checking now.

Soy milk, rice milk: straight from Asia... that's the last thing I would use personally.

I agree with Staned.  I doubt it's much to worry about, but you know how much I worry about Ryder.  So I would probably err on the side of caution and use the soy milk. When Ryder was so sick they had me give him that instead of milk as the rotovirus can cause temporary lactose intolerance.  He loved it...switched to it and back again with no problem at all.

Give her soy or rice milk. They are both very good. Get the kind that says enriched b/c they add a lot of vitamins and minerals to it.  I really like Soy Dream Enriched Plain. They even have really good ice cream.  My nephew was on soy milk when he was a baby up to 2 years old and he has the densest bones.  Your daughter may like the strawberry or chocolate also.
