Sleeping on back

Hi, I'm 20 weeks and have read that I should be sleeping in my side and not my back anymore as uterus can put pressure on a major artery when on my back. The problem I'm having is that I'm finding it very difficult to get comfy on my side (have always slept on my back) even with pillows for support, and once I do get to sleep I wake in the night on my back again and with backache. Does anyone have any suggestions of what may help? How does everyone else sleep? And just how dangerous is it to my baby if I keep laying my back in my sleep?
Thank you

When you get uncomfortable try a thin pillow under part of your body it will angle you Just enough to relieve the pressure...I did this for the last trimester cause my daughter was so big she wouldn't allow sleeping on fully on my back.

It isn't that dangerous if your ob says it isnt. I slept on my back with my first and woke up with horrible back pain.. my twins I would faint if I was on my back because they did lay on that major artery. It cut off all circulation and I started passing out.. if you feel comfortable talk to your obgyn and see what are the risks.. my ob told me to do what feels right

It can reduce blood flow and nutrients getting to your baby. That's why it's important to learn to sleep on your side, particularly your left side, which promotes the most blood flow.

I wake up on my back as well.  And I don't really think much about it.  I have tried everything to get as comfortable as I can on my side, but still end up on my back.  Sometimes I think all of these do's  and don't see during pregnancy can be a bit too much (minus the huge donts) especially controlling sleep positions.

Thank you for your comments, you have all put my mind at rest, it is certainly more comfortable on my back than on my side at the moment for getting to sleep, so now just need to find a way to stay asleep lol

Don't stress your body knows what to do. I told my OB that I have not listened to one bit of the sleeping information.....he said good. Don't read about it and just sleep how you want and do what you need to to keep or get comfy. He said babies are tough alot tougher then what we read about and every book goes over board hence why I have not read one book except for "birthing skills" I'm only reading it as we are not doing antenatal classes. Rest up! I'm 31wks on friday.

My last pregnancy I used a bean bag chair to prop up so I could be on my back but not be sitting up or la Ying down. Also try laying on your back with a pillow under one side so your leaning some to one side. I'm not quite to the point that the baby is too heavy to sleep on my back yet but the bean bag chair is ready to go when I need it haha.
