Dental xrays bad??!

cc8
I just got 6 xrays done to check my dental health. I was nervous to do it at first but assistant convinced me that it is totally safe. I was also double shielded on my belly. What do you guys think based on your own knowledge and experience? Thanks in advance.

I'm having a lot of dental work done and I started out with a whole bunch of x rays being taken because they couldn't see my wisdom teeth. I have a very powerful gag reflex so it took a lot of attempts to get the x rays right.
Right now I'm 27 weeks and those x rays were done somewhere around 23 or so. I don't think there's any serious risk. The only thing my dentist has said is he refuses to a panoramic x ray (entire skull) to get a full picture of my wisdom teeth.

I used to be a dental assistant double shielded and only digital x rays. Not the older ones were it takes a machine to develop them.

I'm a dental assistant, and as long as ur obgyn said u were safe then X-rays a not.harmful, the way they make the dental X-ray machines now days u get more radiation from standing in the sunlight then getting an X-ray for the most part the rays stay at the end of the cone they use on an X-ray machine.. Good luck with your pregnancy.. ")

Here is the letter my doctor told me to hand out to my dentist if I needed to get some work done:

Dear Dental Care Provider:
RE:____________
The above named patient is under obstetrical care at our medical office. Please provide dental care as needed with the following precautions:

1) Local X-rays with abdominal shield. DO THE LEAST AMOUNT OF X-RAYS POSSIBLE

2) Local anesthesia, only if not allergic.

3) No Tetracycline. May use Penicillin, Ampicillin or Cephalosporins.

4) Tylenol with/without Codeine for pain if needed.

you will be fine. I fell off a ladder a couple weeks ago and they literally had to xray EVERYWHERE, they did it as carefully as possible but they said x rays are so safe now a days that the amount of radiation I would get xraying everything would be equivalent to suntanning with tanning lotion on. they said you have to be careful xraying the abdominal but even then, the level you would receive would be tiny so you should be 100% safe doing teeth x rays, esp since your tummy was covered. :)

That's odd.  I'm sure you have the right to refuse.  My dentist will absolutely not xray pregnant women.  I went for my cleaning at 11 weeks and they told me they wouldn't x ray me.  I go back when I'm going to be about 36 weeks & I'm sure they won't xray then either.  Even if they had insisted I do it, I would have insisted they were crazy and refused, lol.

I went to a new dentist and when filling out the form they had a spot to say if you were pregant. I was about 22 weeks and they knew and I had xrays. So from what I heard it's safe.
