With my first we happened to be going home for Christmas a couple of weeks after my positive home pregnancy test.  I was just going to tell my Mon because I couldn't keep it to myself but wanted to wait to tell everyone until it was confirmed by Dr.  My Mom convinced me to tell everyone at Christmas dinner and honestly I am so happy I did.  It was the last time I saw my grandma before she passed so it was great to see her excitement.  The last thing she ever said to me was that I needed to move home so she could watch the baby grow up.  I didn't tell most people at work or friends until 12 weeks.

With this one as soon as I got the positive home test we told our parents.  After Dr confirmed at 8 weeks we told everyone else.  This time I told work as soon as I knew even before Dr confirmed because I worked in a lab and there were certain chemicals I needed to avoid.  Everyone was completely supportive and it turned out to be important because with my first I barely had morning sickness but with this one I was practically stuck on the couch for a month and a half.  So it was good they knew why.  Legally jobs can not fire you for being pregnant.

I honestly wish I had waited longer to at least tell work. But I told them as soon as I went to my first appointment in case I was constantly stepping out to throw up with morning sickness, which I never got in my pregnancy thankfully but this is my first baby and I had no idea what to expect. It just depends on who you want to tell and when you feel right about telling them. Sure you can wait til after 12 weeks, that way you're out of the first trimester and feeling more at ease. But honestly the best thing I've heard is to wait until 20weeks because at that time you're basically in the clear of miscarriages as the possibility of one greatly reduces, and that way you don't have to also share with anyone or everyone. I waited to tell extended family until after 20 weeks, mostly because I was afraid to, afraid of what they may say or think. But I told my parents right away as I am still young and I told work right away in case things were shaky and I needed to keep making bathroom runs. But I should have just shaken it off as being sick at work if it did happen. lol I completely regret telling them at all after how I was treated after they knew and then losing my job due to pregnancy.

Ohhh 1st are extra special and fun. :) This is number 5 for us so I waited until 13 weeks to tell most people, just to avoid the "what? Again?" Lol

Thank you! I've had friends wait till 10 weeks, and tell people at 5 weeks. None of our family even knows. We've kept it between us the whole time - with it being our first.

The old "rule" was to wait until after 12 weeks. There really is no set time, but when you are ready. Most women I know have started out with immediate family and close friends. Congrats!
