Having your baby in another country?

Anyone having their baby away from home? We're Australian but live in the UK. My partner has been here 6 years & me 3. Just thought I'd share how complicated it is to have a baby in another country.

So we're planning on going home to Sydney for Christmas, flights are booked for 18 Dec. Long story but flights are free & if we don't use them by xmas we'll lose them.

To be able to take our baby home we have four government agencies that we have to get thru. Bub is overdue so it's looking unlikely. Here's what we have to do:

1. Apply for British Birth Certificate

2. Apply for Australian Citizenship, because neither my partner & I are British our baby is not automatically a British citizen.

3. Apply for Australian passport.

4. Aply for a British Dependency Visa otherwise they'll only let us bring the bub back to UK for 6 months as a visitor.

All of this at the grand total of approximately £ 1300. What a nightmare!! So this is how I will spend the first few months of bubs life. Hopefully we'll get everything in time & be able to take our baby home.

My advice have your baby at home!!

I guess all you can do is make sure you have all the paperwork completed and submitted and hope for the best!! I'm sure it will work out the way it is suppose to, and hopefully you get to use those free flights!

I love England as well.. Was all set to do the Aussie move and start my career and then I fell in love with my now hubby and couldn't leave him

It's such a pain but we love England & we're close to getting our citzenship so it'll all be worth it in tge end.

I looked into the agencies that help but it costs alot so we're going to manage it on our own. Worse part is we could do it all & pay all that money & if one thing doesn't show up on time we can't get on the plane.  Oh dear!! I'm preparing for a Christmas in England just in case.

Oh wow, I'm so sorry that sounds so difficult!!!

I know dealing with government agencies is not an easy task, especially with a new baby!! I wonder if their is a company who you can pay to help you get everything sorted? May take a bit of the pressure off you.
