birth defect testing

What are your thoughts on getting the screening bloodwork?  My husband and I opted out, but don't want to be making the wrong decision.

My husband and I did have the testing done. It was some simple blood work and an ultrasound. For me I wanted to know so we could be prepared if the tests came back positive. Everything came back negative, I have heard the tests are about 90% accurate when you do the blood and ultrasound together.  I knew that if I didn't do it I would be worried and stressed out more if I hadn't done it. But is a choice parents have to make together and if it is the best decision for you and your family.

I wanted to know and I wasn't stressed out about it because even if it comes back positive, I know that its not 100% accurate. I'm the type of person to not worry about stuff until its right in front of me and I know for sure. My tests were all negative.

I work with individuals with disabilities and I wanted to know only to prepare myself and know what resources I will need to be as successful of a parent as possible. There are so many options out there to help parents understand and make the best of whatever my child may struggle with. I understand not wanting to know due to being stressed out, but I'm one that wants to be in the mind set of knowing what may come and being as ready as possible. Especially already working with families every day and helping them to make the best of the situation. Helping them also to focus on the abilities their child does have rather than just focusing on the disabilities. Just my opinion :)

We said no. We will love the baby no matter what, so why worry about it now? We are just gonna enjoy being pregnant and all that comes with it.

I went I ahead and did it but it was the worst decision I've ever made!!! I was so sick when the results came abnormal, so I was sent to a specialist for ultrasound, I was relief when the specialist told me I have nothing to worry about everything looks good.  My advice for you is don't do it!! Save yourself a heartache!!

I said no thanks with both of my pregnancies. Like the other ladies said its not something I want to worry about even if my baby isn't "normal". I will love my children all the same because they were created with love.

My husband amd I felt just the same as bwilliams...its only 70% accurate anyways and why should we stress over something we cant change. Don't stress over it. (:

I didn't either. I looked at it as why stress out over something you can't do anything about from a test that is not 100%. Especially being told your child may be down syndrome and he/she may not be. My husband and I decided either way we will have and love our child so no need for any more stress during pregnancy.
