Standards have changed actually, 39-41 weeks is now full term according to ACOG who do the studies and write the standards of care for the USA. 37-38 weeks is still early, the risks are much higher if baby is delivered then. If you go into labor on your own at 37 weeks doctors will generally not try to stop it, since the medications used to stop contractions have their own risks. But the safest time to have a baby is 39-41 weeks. There have been healthy babies born as early as 34 weeks, without major problems, but the risks are astronomically higher at that point. It's not worth playing those odds. 40 weeks is a long time - but that's what you signed up for. Settle in for the long haul, the last thing you want is an early delivery and then a long stay in NICU. A healthy baby is a much better option, even though it takes longer.
