M.I.L. Problems

My mother-in-law suffers from a severe depressive disorder; recently she has been super bad, calling me and my husband names fighting with us she even went so far as to suggest our baby (I am 12 weeks) isn't my husband's. I have had enough, we tried calling the police to have her committed after he threatened to kill herself on Facebook several times, but they did nothing.

My question is this: do any you think it's unreasonable to demand my MIL get the mental help she so apparently needs before I let her have anything to do with her grandchild?

No. Not at all. In the end, I think she would thank you for it. I can't believe the police did nothing. I had a roommate when I was 18 threatened to kill herself and broke a mirror. I called n they took her to the hospital to be evaluated and put on suicide watch.  Stay strong....I know this must be really difficult to go through, especially with all the hormones you have with pregnancy.

Absolutely not! She is very unstable and should not be around children. And after she gets help, I still wouldn't leave her alone with the baby. Mental illness cannot be cured, it can only be controlled. Last year in my state, a mother let the grandmother pick up her children from daycare because she wanted to spend some time with them and her mental illness was "under control". A few hours later the two children and grandmother were foundin the car in an apparent murder/suicide. It's so tough when it is family, but you are making the right decision.

No. She is that unstable then it's not safe. You don't know what someone is capable of in those moments. Even if she normally would never hurt anyone. You have every right to say no on this.
