For those who have had or pregnant with twins

I have a 12 week checkup at the end of sept where they will listen for the heartbeats. My question is, if they can only find one do they normally do an ultrasound to determine if there is really one? Or will I just have to wait until next appointment. When I asked my doc the last time she said they don't usually have a lot of trouble finding the second but sometimes due to where baby is you can't find it at 12 wks. I didn't think to ask about an ultrasound then so I'm wondering if any one else knows.   My twins are in separate sacs if that makes a difference.  They heard both heartbeats at 7 week ultrasound both at 138. I just know I'll be beside myself if they don't hear the other and make.me wait!

Thank you as well! So good to know they shouldn't give up. Makes me lot less stressed :)

I now have two year old fraternal twin girls. :)
The doctors always had trouble finding Baby A's heartbeat because she liked to hide as far down in my pelvis and towards my back as she could get. They never gave up looking for her though. They always made sure to get a read from both babies before letting me go.

They may have you move around, change positions, or drink some water to try to get your little ones to cooperate so they can hear both heartbeats.

You're so welcome! I'm so glad what I said brought you some comfort! ♡ I'm definitely not a professional at this twin thing yet lol but I know getting both heartbeats at every doctor visit is top priority. That's good your doctor's office specialize in twin births. Mine doesn't but they are partnered with another physician office that does so I have to go both throughout this pregnancy. With the babies being in separate sacs should make it very easy to grab both beats. Usually the identical twins might end up one hiding behind the other and that cause some confusion and so forth. But please let me know what happens. I know those little babies are doing just fine in there :-)

Thanks so much! I should have asked you right away. I forgot you are farther along :) I will only have one ultrasound with a specialist at 24 weeks. My office deals in a lot of twins though. But what you said makes me feel better I hope if they can't hear both I'll at least get an ultrasound to confirm. I'll definitely bring it up next time. :)

My guess would be that the doctor will be as thorough as possible and do a second ultrasound if necessary to grab that 2nd heartbeat or at least refer you to a high-risk doctor that specialize in multiple pregnancies. My doctor have so far been able to grab both heartbeats at every appointment but he still referred me to a specialist once a month with higher technology to keep track of bone growth, brain, weight, etc...Sorry to drift off subject but overall you shouldn't have to wait until the next appointment to hear both beats. It's essential to hear both at every appointment or she needs to take the next steps to ensure before you go home you know what's going on with both babies.
