Anniocentesis

How many of you ladies had this done? Is it painful? How was it? This is my first time getting this done and I'm nervous.

You do have the right to refuse. If you don't feel comfortable with the procedure let them know. They absolutely can NOT force you into it.

If you're not comfortable doing it, by all means talk to your doctor before they do this.. 38 weeks seems late to be trying to do something like that.. I had shots to speed up my baby's lungs. They never said anything about amniocentesis that late in pregnancy...

Why are they inducing?  You should be able to refuse the amnio.  Sounds like an excuse to do an expensive procedure.

I'm not sure. I went for my check up Tuesday and the dr was like ok we're gonna induce u Tuesday morning but first we're gonna do an amniocentesis. She never asked if it was something I wanted to do

Personally I opted against it when I had my son. They wanted to do the same when trying to schedule a c section. At 38wks your baby is considered term and I highly doubt that there will be any issues with the lungs at this point. My dr settled for doing a thorough ultrasound and then went from there.

I'm just nervous bc I really don't see the point in them doing it now that I will be 38wks. I had my first child at 32wks and they didn't do this

I had one done with my last one for the very same reason bc I had been in preterm labor for so long they checked the lungs. It was very unconfortable. But they did it with ultrasound to see better. I didn't have any complications and went home the same day. Had my baby at 34 weeks which was a week later

the risk of miscarriage is very small 1 in 800, they usually do an ultrasound while they insert the needle - which makes the procedure much safer

I had one and to be honest the only thing that was a tad annoying was the numbing needle before the amnio needle. Nothing else hurt during the process. The only pain i was in was a little cramping the following 24 hours. But nothing to worry about.

Did you ask to have this done or did your doctor recommend it for a reason?

Naturally, if you have anything invasive done, it carries risks. They'll go in with a long needle and puncture the sac around the baby to collect the fluid. Which could cause an infection within the sac, cause you to leak fluid or a chance of miscarriage. Although the risk of that may be small, there is still a chance. If there's no need to do the testing other than wanting to know what your chances are for your child having something, I would reconsider. However, if it's recommended by your doctor for a reason, I would do some research and figure out what is best for you.

I opted against having it done for all of my pregnancies. The risks may be small but they are still risks and I know for myself and my husband, we are not willing to put myself or baby through anything unnecessary.

Best of luck to you and the rest of your pregnancy!

I had one with my first daughter. It kind of hurt but it wasn't agonizing pain. They insert a needle into your belly and suck amniotic fluid out with a small tube. You can feel the fluid come out of your body. I'm 21 weeks now and I probably end up getting another one tomorrow because my cervix shortened up even though I'm on progesterone. Smh but it'll be alright.
