Short Cervix???

I have a high risk pregnancy and am 14 weeks and 4 days, today I went to see my perinatologist and they did a vaginal scan and said my cervix measured 2.75inches, but two weeks ago it was at 3inches. Has anyone had this happen. Should I be concerned?

Flowers75 don't worry about it and I hope you and baby are doing well:) I'm just really concerned because mine has already started shortening and I'm not even at the halfway mark. You ladies have given me a lot to think about and research and I really appreciate it. Hoping we all have healthy babies!

Cdolan2012 did they recommend a specific probiotic or could I eat activia? Also did they say to take just a regular dosage throughout the entire pregnancy?

Sorry to take so long to reply was hospitalized. I started progesterone at 20 weeks due to previous preterm, but my short cervix was notice at 28 weeks. Had a ultrasound to see if has improved with 3 weeks of bed rest, but passed out 1-2 minutes on the table. To @willtowin160

I never had to have a cerclage. The specialist I saw also recommended daily probiotics to prevent bacteria from eating away at the water sack and I had cervical length checks at 16, 19, and 22 weeks. No bed rest yet, I'm almost 29 weeks. The shots seem to have been great so far, I'm having much fewer preterm symptoms than I had the first time and cervix length has stayed strong. Good luck!!!

I go to a very well known, amazing high risk dr. This is my understanding about the progesterone. I was given the vaginal suppositories because at my initial visit my levels weren't as high as they wanted and it helps prevent miscarriage. When I swapped to the injections, our goal for them is to keep my uterus calm and prevent contractions which in turn helps prevent dilation of the cervix. I learned this the hard way bc my insurance doesn't pay for the injections. I ran out of them and had a lot of suppositories left so I figured what's the difference, I'll save some money and use the suppositories. Boy was I wrong. Within a week I was in so much discomfort from the cramping and contractions and my cervix had shortened 5mm since the last check just a couple weeks prior. I was honest with my doc and he is convinced the only thing keeping me preggo is the cerclage. I am back on the shots and feel so much better.

Tamyoung thanks, that makes sense bc I was wondering why he only mentioned a cerclage, but didn't schedule one. I'm also really happy to know the shots and cerclage is working for you.

I have a history of preterm birth so they gave me a precautionary cerclage at 14 weeks this time. My cervix measured over 3 cm. I am now 34 weeks and have shortened to aroynd 2 cm. I was on vaginal progesterone from 6 weeks and swapped to the shots at 17 weeks. I say it's better to be safe than sorry and get a cerclage with your history. I worked for 10 weeks after my cerclage placement and my bedrest is not related to my cervix,  but other issues.

Cokd what was your cervix length when they gave you the cerclage? Has it stayed the same length or gotten longer? How far along are you?

I feel u better ask for a preventative circalage which can be placed in ur current GA.i had my placed at 13 weeks and I am high risk too.but with ladies with incompetent cervix that's the best affordable solution .Also for the progesterone shots or vaginal suppositories starting week 16  , and bi weekly scan to check the cervical length.  wish u all the good luck

This is my second. I went into labor with my first at 21 weeks and he passed last December. They didn't tell me why it happened they only said I had an infection, but they weren't sure if the infection was the cause or effect. And now that my peri said my cervix shortened I am just really scared. He said he wants to start me on progesterone shots at 17 weeks, but that's a little over 2 weeks away and I am just worried that my cervix might shorten even more. Did you get the cerclage or just shots? Do you feel it's helped you?

A shortened cervix can lead to preterm birth. I was told that anything less than 3 cm is a concern. Is this your first pregnancy? My first son was born prematurely and this pregnancy I am taking progesterone shots weekly from 17-36 weeks. You can only do these if you're carrying a single baby and it's not your first pregnancy. Fortunately my cervical length has been good but I was told that if it got less than 3 cm they would also start me on vaginal progesterone.
