Took klonopin before knowing I was pregnant

Hello,

I have a couple of questions since this is my first pregnancy (not planned) and I'm a little worried. I've been prescribed 0.5 mg Klonopin and 1mg Xanax for anxiety, wich I took only when necessary (usually one every 2-4 days). I discovered I was pregnant at 4 weeks and I inmediately stopped taking them. I was also on antibiotics (ciprofloxacin) at the time for a gum infection. I also stopped taking the antibiotic and my dentist prescribed a mouthwash instead. My provider will see me at 11 weeks, but i'm going crazy wondering if I have hurt my baby in any way. I'm terrified of birth defects. I would like to know the effects of this medications this early in pregnancy. Thank you

I have been told that if it was so early in pregnancy that you didn't know, baby probably isn't even sharing a blood supply with you. If you stopped at four weeks, then you should be fine.

Oh dear. The placenta isn't some magic sack with a doorway. Most tetragenic (monster creating) drugs cause miscarriage in the embryo. Once the placenta begins growing most parts of the fetus are in their early stages, just very small. Going off of an antibiotic, which could just make the infection stronger, was an odd thing for a doctor to do, but at least they were a doctor. Do take folic acid, prevents spina bifida.

the placenta doesn't start forming until 5 weeks, so you should be fine. But call the doc that prescribed your meds and they can switch you to something safe.

Probably not. I was taking 80mg of amphetamine until we realized I was 7 weeks pregnant. I stopped immediately (which is dangerous so be careful) and my boy has 0 detectable defects. Talk with your doc about meds and if you should continue.
