doctor payment plan

I'm a ftm and I'm 13 weeks pregnant. My sister had her baby 3 months ago and her doctor didn't give her a bill until the baby was born. I decided to use the same doctor with my pregnancy. The office called me saying I have to have to pay them in advance for the pregnancy and they want all the bills paid off one month before the baby is born. I asked them why they can't just send the bill to my insurance and they said they can't legally do that until the baby is here. They then told me that if I end up over paying them they will reimburse me later. Is this the same way other doctors are billing now? I feel like it seems a little fishy.

My doctor office was the same way. However I have tenncare (state insurance) as my secondary insurance and it's covering everything my primary insurance doesn't cover. If you are eligible for state insurance I highly recommend it.

Well that makes me feel a little more comfortable. Everyone I have talk to about it told me that they have never heard of that.

I don't think it sounds right either. When I questioned it and refused to sign anything right then and there they told me all doctor bill this way now and I won't be able to find anyone to bill at the end. I don't understand how they can charge me for something that hasn't happened yet. I know payment is personal but this is all so new to me and I don't know what to expect. I really don't want to be taken advantage of.

My doctors office does the same thing. They estimate the charges based on what your insurance will pay for a typical delivery. You will end up paying it anyway.

I made monthly payments on my baby from the time of my seconded appointment and paid it off a month before he was do which was last month.
