Here's the scoop. The machine will give an EFW (ESTIMATED FETAL WEIGHT) based on fetal biometric measurements. Reread that sentence....ESTIMATED. Fetal length is not evaluated by ultrasound. WE go by certain guidelines to achieve measurements as accurately as possible. I follow those guidelines to the best of my ability. It can be difficult to do due to fetal position and/or maternal obesity. Most babies are 18-22 inches at birth.
My doctor has been telling me approx length and weight since I went in for my confirmation appointment. And with my first, I asked at a regular prenatal check up, not an ultra sound and they were able to give me an "educated guess" just by touching and measuring my stomach.
It sounds like you may have had a rude and inexperienced tech.
I don't believe them. Just me but was told my son was already over ten pounds. They took him two weeks early and he was only 7lbs11oz. They guess and sometimes are close but no one can really tell the weight of your baby till he or she is born.
Just find out today that I'm having a girl and she weight 14 oz.
At 17 weeks 1 day my doc scanned baby and measured her, approximately weighed 8 ounces :)
Maybe the Dr will. The ultrasound tech never really tells me anything its always the Dr.
Basically it's just a guess. They cannot tell you with any certainty - based off length and gestational age they can give you a rough estimate. But if an ultrasound tech tells you a specific weight, pounds and ounces, they're bluffing. They can be off by well over a pound and they know it. My "about 7 pounds" baby came out at 9lbs two days after that "estimate". I would definitely say that in no way does that mean you had a "bad" tech - just an honest one.
I'm sorry I didn't finish my statement j stated his weight to let you know that they can give you and estimate but the estimate can also be wrong.
At 22 weeks my son estimated weight was 1 lb 6 ounces, and at 28 weeks a little over 3 lbs.
I found out last week at 37 weeks that my baby is about 7 lbs 6 ounces. They measure the baby's skull and abdomen and the computer system estimates the weight. Maybe they use a really outdated system?
