Honestly my degree is in child psychology and child development and I don't agree it needs some nick name personally. It's a vagina and a penis at the end of the day. Nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about calling it such.

I agree with Waiting. Maybe because I'm a nurse, but I've always referred to them as exactly what they are- a penis and a vagina. There's no need for silly nicknames.  They are just body parts.

My 3 year old son has a penis. That's what it is and that's what he calls it - when he learned the words for arm and leg and foot and elbow he learned penis too. There's nothing gross or weird or inappropriate about any part of his body. Why give a silly name to just one body part? We don't want him to be ashamed of any part of his body so we speak honestly about bodies, what the different parts do, and how bodies are different (yes, he knows that girls have vaginas).

In my house we have 3 very beautiful daughters, with one more one the way ;) we call it a gina. The reason being we don't have little Nick names is because a few years ago an insadent happened with my husbands niece and her parents called it her butt. Well some one was touching her "butt" and when the parents were trying to ask her questions about the insedent she kept saying he kissed my butt. Well after a huge fall out in the family it turns out that he literly kissed her butt and not her vagina as everyone was thinking . Now either one are appropriate but in the situation I think kissing a butt with clothes on is not on the same scale as kissing her vagina . If her parents would have told her to use correct names for her body parts it would have made things very clear from the beginning.
My oldest is 15 And I started out using friendly names but when my daughter got to be around 5 (school age) I didng want there to be any confusion as to what her vagina was. God forbid if something awful was to happen and she need to go to an adult and tell them what happened,  I never wanted someone to be confused as to where my daughter was touched.

My girls all know they have a butt and a vagina but we call our vaginas our privates the girls are just more comfortable with that

My son is now almost 8 years old and has always called it his 'willy' I'm in the UK so obviously we have different sayings for different things. My little girl says her 'bits and bum' so she knows the difference x

My aunt always called it pee-pee. For girls I think it's fine saying pee-pee but weird nicknames will cause confusion. I'm having a boy, I suppose we will just call it a wee-wee since that's what my OB called it, lol.

I think it's an individual thing. My daughter is 6 and knows the anatomical names for things - mostly because we spend a great deal of time out on a farm and she has had a rather quick lesson in anatomy now that her female goat had babies.

We don't call it a vagina or penis in public though, we just use "privates"...and she knows it's not polite to talk about those things in public. Mostly because I dread the day I get a call from the elementary school saying she was talking about animal parts or something she saw animals doing.

My Grandmother however has always called it a chi-chi? But then again going pee is also "tee-tee" so I don't know lol

I call them privates... and I'm assuming my child will aswell. Don't get me wrong he or she will know the correct terms for what body part they will be having. However I'd rather have my child say I hurt my private at the park than I hurt my penis.

For my oldest, I always just called it what it was. I didn't c the point of giving pet names to body parts. As he got older, he just called them whatever he chose to at the time. It's been nuggets, then after watching kung fu panda, it was tenders lol He's ten tho so he is old enough to make those decisions about his junk for himself. I'm not at that point with my youngest yet.

I've always known it as private parts or penis and vagina. Any nicknames came when I was a lot older. I'll teach my son both if he happens to say something about his penis hurts or whatever in public I won't be ashamed it's better than him yelling out ****!

To the "child phycologist" I respect your line of work, and your input, but hearing a 2/3 year old little girl say vagina doesnt sit well with me. 6 or 7, when they know its not appropriate to yell "vagina" out inbthe middle of target is different, until then we refer as "lady bits, or just bits for short" . And I personally don't think there is anything "dirty" or "secretive" about calling it someone else is early childhood .

I have 2 daughters and we called it their Nonos. My oldest is 6 and she knows its her vagina but we still call their Nonos.

Right now, I refer to it as ding ding. When I feel he's old enough to know the actual term, then he can either use that term or call it ding ding.
