Having a doula at your birth is a wonderful decision, but she doesn't take the place of a midwife or obgyn. She's there to support you, inform you of different options, but not provide medical assistance or evaluation. Prices vary among doulas because they are based on experience, certifications, number of births assisted; however, many offer reduced rates if your income necessitates it. There's a site, doulamatch.com, that you can use to find doulas near you. I used both birthing and postpartum doulas and highly recommend it.
I wish I could get one but the cost was to high =(
I have been looking at a doula too since i will be alone for the babys birth. I just wonder why the price range is so large, and does the you get what you pay for apply here.
Thank you. That is the same here in the U.S. from my understanding. I just want some one who will stick with my birth plan and not let the doctors try to change my mind. I want a vbac because this is my last child and I have my mind set. I wasn't sure if a midwife or a doula would be best for this. And I do know the doula does get paid out of pocket.
My understanding at least here in Canada is that a doula is ment for support only not for delivery so u would still need a midwife or ob I believe, but again that's Canada. I was looking into a doula and she would come to where I'm delivering but not deliver
It depends on your need - if its medical support I would go tor midwife but if its emotional then doula would be good. It about getting someone who meets your needs - and while midwives in lieu of doctors can be paid from medical insurance, I think foulas would be out of pocket. Just check coz am not sure.
