far away family- Baby shower how too?

Is it tacky to set up a registry for the baby shower? We live 1500kms away from most of our family so its not really possible for them to pop in and check what we have or need. Any suggestions on how to get all the stuff home too? I'll be having the baby in Perth where the family are but flying home 10 days later.
Also, on a side note, I'm really uncomfortable getting spoilt by the families as I'm not materialistic. How do I tell ppl I'd rather they knit booties or make us something? We only need probably two or three other big ticket items and as this is the first grandbaby both sides we're just going to end up with so much stuff.

If you have the bigger necessary items just ask for diapers, you can never have enough diapers. My mother in law has been buying stuff like crazy since she wasn't able to be around her other son for his kids. I feel bad because I've never had someone do anything like this for me before.

I read on here a while back of some online baby shower thing. But I don't know much more about it. But also my family has actually went on our registry and bought something and then sent it to us.
