ham sandwich

So I just found out today at work that apparently eating deli meat during pregnancy is not so good :( I've been eating ham sandwiches for lunch at work   on and off and now I'm freaking out

I had this discussion with my obgyn and she said that it's better to get the deli meat that's actually from the deli in the store and not the pre packaged kind in the aisle. Luckily for me pb&j has been a big craving of mine with this one.

I understand. I've been like this over a few foods. My outlook is that what is done is done and I will watch what I eat now. Then I started looking up certain foods before i ate them. Go ahead and tell your Dr about it and they can set your mind at ease for what to look for. There then becomes a lot of food that you look up and someone says don't eat it and it feels restrictive. Wash fruits and veggies before you eat them, limit seafood and check the list of what not to eat, cook meat thoroughly, and keep eating healthy.

Good lunch ideas are fruit salad, chicken salad, grill cheese sandwich, yogurt with nuts, leftover dinner, noodles with spinach,  chicken ceasar wrap, granola and fiber protein bars etc. Combination of any of the above or whatever else you like.

Please don't eat too much tuna either. I cannot believe someone would recommend that. Tuna has mercury and while we as adults can process more mercury your baby cannot. You can eat some tuna but most doctors and books say not more than 2 servings a week.

It's not ham specifically.  It's DELI HAM or any deli meat.

I would not eat it every day but a few times is not a big deal. If you heat it before hand you have to make sure to get it hot enough to kill the bacteria so research it.

The paper my doctor gave me said that as long as the packaging says approved by health standards. You can eat lunch meat as long as it's before the expiration date.

Listeria does not always show up quickly.. it can take a month before it makes you sick. But just heat the meat in the microwave until steaming hot before eating it. You can find more detailed info online about it also.

It's better to avoid deli meat due to increased risk of listeria. Don't freak out though because symptoms of listeria poisoning appear quickly :)
Microwave the ham before you use it in your sandwiches. Heat will kill bacteria.
