First time Mommy! How does the pushing process work?

Lately I've been preparing myself and getting plenty of exercise to ease on into my big day which is less than 5weeks.. I've watched several labor videos but I'm clueless to one thing. Are you pushing down towards your stomach or like your (sorry I have to say this), going tothe bathroom? I'm going with a natural birth so I won't go numb down there.. So many people stayed in labor longer because they couldn't feel what they were doing. Pleasssee help, thanks!

Just like going poop. I actually asked the nurses if it was like pooping and she said exactly and thats the only way it made sense to me to push.
