membrane sweep question

I'm 39wks 4dys and at my doctors appointment this morning he performed a membrane sweep which was very painful and now I notice when I use the bathroom and wipe there's some brownish discharge and I've been in pain ever since and I've been getting contractions but not consistent. Is this normal?

It's normal to have spotting after a membrane sweep. Also it's normal for contractions to come and for your water to break.  That was the point of the sweep. I had one today as well, but she asked if I wanted one depending if I was dialted. I told her yes, because it speeds up the labor process or at least it did with my second pregnancy.

I think my Dr called it scrapping the membranes... I had it done. Wasn't warned that it was going to be so painful! Would have appreciated a warning! Won't do that again! Maybe call and ask Dr. Its supposed to help you go into labor faster. I think I recall reading in one of my books that there can be a risk of infection. I only remember I hurt when she did it but that was all.
